The SVT 40 Tokarev ***updated april 12th***

The later models without the side grooves are actually considered more valuable as production was significantly less. IE 1943 and later.

A real sniper model with the side grooves and the one back groove on the top of the receiver goes for around $500. I found one of these, and while it's a refurb the metal is perfect and from the trigger along with looks I don't think it was ever issued. It feels brand new. The stock was also a AVT navy.

Neat rifles, and not too expensive for collecting. I prefer them over the SKS.

Hey Epoxy7
I cant say I prefer SVT 40 over SKS but id put it right next to it.
I think I was lucky to find a sniper varient at Crappy tire, I've been looking around the dealers sites and none of them offer
a sniper model.
Mine looks in great shape but the bore has seen better days, I'm just hoping it will group half decent.
I have a 91/30 with the barrel shot out, it fires OK but no accuracy whats so ever, my M44 on the other hand groups OK.
I have a one of my SKS's with a black bore, they must not have changed the barrel during refurb my other ones all have chromed minty bores like new.
cheers

t mack, got your pics,i have downsized them otherwise, would take forever to appear. As you said, you got a ex sniper 1942,refurbished with an AVT stock 1944 dated.

I had one of these, 1941 with no rail a few years ago. My theory is that this is one of these late pre-November 1941(evacuation) production rifles. Or early post-evacuation rifle produced in Mednogorsk from Tula base parts(more than likely is the case)... Looks like the fonts differ from serial and year of production....

Interesting! Thanks for the info. Was reading about that evacuation.

Worked on scrubbing the bore some more today. Its a little frosty but really not bad at all. Rifling is great still. Was a good chance out of the safe for a quick photo op! :)

I am hoping to get myself one of these babies in the next couple of months once I get my PAL.
Great post and I will deffo be using it for reference!

Hey all you SVT experts out there I have a question for you. Do some of the refurbed SVT's come with stamped trigger groups? I saw one the other day that had stamped serial numbers on the trigger group as opposed to electro penciled ones. Does this mean its a finnish capture or something?

The electro penciled probably had the old number scrubbed off during refurb then electro penciled to match. Every combination is possible.

Just got my SVT from Tradeex, it shoots well, but I really need the gas wrench to get it cycling healthy. My rifle is in great shape with one long scratch on the stock, which has been repairs and it even seems like the guys at tradeex cleaned the cosmo off for me. I have questions if the pros have time for me.

1.I'd love to get the "Special" wrench which can remove the muzzle device, is anyone making repros? do I really need to remove that bit?
2. tried some repro stripper clips; cool, but they fit really tight and after the first one, subsequent attempts would not load rounds into the mag at all; rather had rounds popping out in my hand as i pressed down.
3. magazines. I hear terrible things about the repros, any antidote to this? I'd like to get a couple spare mags eventually
3. using the cartridge as a tool; yeesh, this is very counter-training to me, but it looks like it works well. Can anyone lay my mind at ease?
4. mine appears to me marked as a 1943 tula -38 rebuild, but that doesn't make much sense, does it?
5. what is a good price for a bayonet and scabbard?

Thank you very much for your time!

For the tool, look on the EE, there,s a fellow nutz making repro. Look here
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...ight-elevation-tool&highlight=svt+40+gas+tool

I have brass stripper clip that work perfectly but i have few steel one that fit really too tight in the guide. My clip cames with chinese ammo many years ago,i didnt try the clip available now so cant comment on thoses.

Magazine may need some fitting but doable.

No problem using a cartridge as tool, they were intented for this. Its not like you gonna strike the primer with a hammer so no worries and "tool away" with a bullet.

The SVT 38 have receiver a bit longer were the year is stamped. Pic would help. Some SVT 38 have been rebuilt to SVT 40 specs but without pic of your, cant say, possible yes but very unlikely.

Scabbard and bayonet are epensive, expect to pay $160-$225 for one.

Hope that help,

Joce

That helps a lot Joce! Thankyou. Much rather buy from a fell gunnut than someplace down in the US.

Do I need to be able to take off the muzzle brake though? I feel like I do, but do I? should I?

Mag fitting...like hold it side by side with my original mag and eyeball how the tabs differ, then file it?

The repo mags are surprisingly bad. I got one with the last SVT I bought and had to move the rear lugs down almost 1/4" befor it would fit.
You don't need the tool to change the gas regulator. Just loosen it off and it turns easily.

The muzzle plug can be removed for cleaning the brake but it is not an obligation. If you want to unscrew it, the plug is reverse threaded, will unscrew clockwise.

Anyone correct me if Im wrong but werent these rifles typically reloaded from the top. I mean I guess you can have a bunch of spare mags but why bother unless your going for a kick ass display!

They have provision to be re-loaded with charging clips from the top of the open action, but originally soldiers were issued a pouch to hold two magazines as well. I suppose as war went on and supplies became more critical, as well as finding that fitting the mag. to the rifle for reliable lock-in and feeding was sometimes a chore, it was cut back to one gun/one mag.

The mag.s were never meant to be fired off then tossed aside, at any rate. Loading from clips is very fast, once you find some that will fit in the guide (or they get squeezed into shape from use), so it's just as good as an extra mag. Saves both you and the Red Army in money, weight, and time to pre-charge every mag. if you just carry clips.

I've got a couple of the modern reproduction magazines, and they needed a good 15 minutes of grinding and test-fitting to work (mostly the pair of small square lugs on the back of the body). Then after firing the first time the mag. fell right out under recoil, I found out I hadn't gone far enough. Fresh outta the box I put one mag. in and it got stuck in the rifle; needed a lot of thumping to get it out. (Got a couple of original spares, too. Anyone says I have too many, I just tell 'em I'm loading up to hold off the siege of Leningrad.)

I've been doing some reading around the web, and apparently the Kovrov arsenal never actually built any SVT-40's, and the circled arrow is actually from the Podolsk arsenal. Anyone have any factual information concerning this?
