The T97 Thread!

yep, these guns don;t seem to like any mags except the traditional alum mags...I asked about pmag and the gun store told me they wont fit. so i bought 5 aluminium mags.

Thats an excellent track record for the rifle, glad to see some are getting higher round counts mines at 400 rds? Still a 1060rd case of norinco 556 here to burn through im definitley going to keep track of wear and ftf

Couple questions about the T97...

1. I read a lot about FTF and issues pushing bullets into cartridges... Are these mag issues or rifle issues? Is there a proven way to correct this without making any home made modifications to the rifle?
A bit of both, IMO. The recoil spring is way to strong, unnecessarily. A simple experiment with a lightened recoil spring can prove that very little force is actually needed to operate the T97, reliably.
(if you can find a spare recoil spring, that is).

On the other hand, the magazine rocks back to front in the mag well, and the mag lips are not always formed to standard, to keep the top cartridge correctly aligned.
For instance, the E-Lander mag that came with the T97 had the lips bent low, the cartridge tip and neck would not clear over the front of the mag. A quick but careful correction with a pair of pliers solved this issue, now the cartridge case only touches the front of the mag when the case shoulder moves past (similar to many other brands of mags).

2. Are these made by the same factory as the military T95? I read an article online that they were contracted out to a company that used to build air rifles (EMEI) and aren't actually made by Norinco.
Apparently NORINCO uses various subcontractors themselves, from what I read, and EMEI had a good reputation for quality.
But as far as I know, the T97 was redesigned, specifically for the Canadian market. I suppose the redesign could have been done better;
for instance the mag release location (awkward by design?), as well as the safe/fire selector location (newer Q95-1 changed it's location, just above the grip).
But the biggest issue I have is the gas block, way to much force is applied to the bolt carrier.
I have no idea who established the specs for the gas block, based on what criteria, it just doesn't make any sense. This may be a (re)design issue entirely, rather than a manufacturing one.

The reciever and trigger group are the ONLY changes made the rest is the nature of the beast and it was ton so you couldnt stick a 97a trigger pack in it, everything else is the same as the old t97a mag release location safety etc.

Put not far off 1,000 rounds through mine so far,I don't mind the mag release, you get used to it.
I've heard people complain about stripping them down to clean them,I fail to see any issue with taking them apart, its quick and easy.

So about the pmags... Apparently one fits and the other doesn't. They are the exact same product and look the exact same as far as I can tell.

EDIT: just purchased another today. It loads/unloads easily. Also doesn't seem to have issues stripping the rounds off like one of the previous ones I've purchased.

The T97a was never perfect, to start with, it was based of a rifle rushed into service prematurely. Later, the Chinese noticed some issues and fixed them, as it is expected. It's no surprise that version 1.0 may not be the best - it's very similar to the M16 story.
So the nature of the Chinese beast is to evolve, not to accept whatever looks sketchy.
In any case, it's more fun to improve on what can be improved. :)

I bought an airsoft LH mag release ($15... better to experiment on cheap stuff) & had to do a bit of filing to fit it into the recess & it functions perfectly. its a snug fit so the release doesn't work from the right side... no loss as it is awkward to use. Now I can pop a mag out without looking like I'm squeezing out a duke!

My posts purpose was to shut up those who think the safety and mag release are special for just our canadian rifles which is not true

Finally got a chance to take my T97 out to the range today to see what it could do. I was fully expecting it to be "good enough, I guess."

...But I like it. I like it A LOT. It feels lightweight and well-balanced. The recoil is excellently absorbed by the return and striker springs. The trigger is light and predictable, and it's difficult to jerk it off target because of the smooth pull.
The most common complaint I see are about the sights. The only downside I found is the same that I would find with, say, a carbine-length AR. Short sight radius and a big fat front sight post as a result. Yeah, they aren't as good as AR15 irons, but I found they sat at a natural feeling height and didn't require much concentration to use. The less I thought about them, the better I shot.

And it's accurate! At 50 yards I was getting 1" with both AE and Norinco 55gr FMJ. Unfortunately, I didn't have a sight adjustment tool. I brought some gadgets I had on hand that I was hoping would work, but that sight wouldn't budge, and I needed to drift the post waaay left to land on paper at 100m. When I aimed off, I got groups of 3-4" which isn't bad, but I know I can do better if I had a consistent point of aim! I think I'd be able to get consistent groups of just under 3" - I'll have one for next time!

I also got to try out this little guy:

FPr9scL.jpg

A single point sling mount made by CGN user burdock - He had a few prototypes made for himself and sold the extras on the EE. I picked one up and was not disappointed. It replaces the takedown pin in front of the magwell, which is the perfect spot. It's solidly constructed and designed to rotate freely in place.

Bullpups are well suited to single point slings, if only you can find a place to clip them on! This solved the problem nicely.

Here ya go.

That looks awesome! What specifically did you use?

I'm afraid I already tossed the package. It is a generic LH AR mag release for a steel airsoft AR. It was only $15 so I wasn't concerned with the make but I do remember the package said it was made from zinc. That worried me at first but the metal seemed quite sturdy when I filed it to fit the magwell: I only filed enough for a stable tight fit so it will only eject from the left side which is fine since the right side is such a PITA. As such, I keep the original in my gun bag in case it fails.

Nice single point sling mount... I missed the EE ad. :p
