The T97 Thread!

I've been thinking about getting a T97, but just saw a YouTube video where it was mentioned that the T97 really messes up the brass, leaving a huge dent in the side of the case. That pretty much makes it unusable for reloading, and as I like to reload this would be pretty close to a show stopper for me. Any of you who have a T97 can you confirm or refute the T97's case abuse tendencies?? TIA

Most semi's are hard on brass but if I was wanting to reload with the T97 and wasn't "blasting" I'd just turn of the gas and hand cycle the cases onto the bench.

It does put a visible dent (but not a crack) in the middle of the case, but probably along the lines of what other semis will do. As a test I picked some of my once fired brass, sized and reloaded it, and then marked the dent locations with a Sharpie. Fired them off, the dents are formed out for the most part and the brass looked good, except for the new dent, hopefully in a different location. I reload slowly and inspect each piece of brass including the necks and case bottoms, to me it's a hobby not a production line. For those times when I want to blast away a gazillion rounds I'll use the non-reloadable steel cased ammo.

Of course YMMV and it's your own choice on whether or not to reload the brass. As other posters have stated you can always hand cycle the rounds, but that's what I have my bolt action for.

Denting be damned, my T97 throws brass so far that it's often not recoverable. With the cheap Norinco surplus, that's not such a bad thing.

Stupid question: (probably)

If the big hubbub about .300 AAC BLK is that it uses all of the exact same AR parts aside from the barrel without any modifications to a 5.56. Does that mean you could potentially swap out the barrel of a T97 and turn it into a .300 blackout ?

IIRC the T97 barrel is pressed and pinned which would make the job a lot more difficult and require a press, etc. Same as putting a new barrel on a Vz.58 or AK.

I'm lucky, at my indoor range the brass shoots forwards and up, hits the top wall of the port and bounces back and lands mostly on my head;)

I have thought about that lately making it a little more versatile, I hear .300 black out isn't too bad for deer.

I've been thinking about T97 builds and came up with this. I found some barrel mounts for this, and I have a "dragon claw" bipod that fits perfectly just behind the first barrel mount next to the gas valve -- but not in the photos. I thought the bipod would look silly next to the bayonet. I wanted to have a second sight, so I mounted a Burris Fastfire 3 on a quick detach angle mount. I considered an EoTech XPS but the fastfire is just so little, seemed to go well. I considered the T97 upper rail, but everything just seems too high -- unlike some other 5.56 bullpups that have a flat rail aligned with the cheek weld. The angle mount needed some height off the barrel, and found the Barska laser sight a good fit upside down. The laser switch could be operated from either hand, if necessary. Another laser I tried with an integrated barrel mount didn't have enough clearance to get past the muzzle brake.

I haven't taken it out and test this config yet. I was thinking the iron sights could stay on 300 yards, and zero the laser and reflex to 50 yards. 50 yards seems to be a magic zero for 5.56 looking at the ballistics, and 100y zero looking kind of useless.

- I had an issue finding a 0.75" carry strap that I liked, so I re-used an older sling that has metal clips allowing me to clip onto some tied 550 paracord, "Israeli style." The primary loop where it is attached is a butterfly knot so there is no slip, and terminates in a way that will never allow it to come off the rifle.
- I had an issue with the LAR-15 mags that have the sloped floor, and the coupler was also angled, leading to a weird-shaped double mag. I'll get that fixed, though I included a photo so other people will beware. It obviously works and does not interfere with the grip, but it doesn't fit mag pouches. I also replaced all mag followers with E-landers. The mag with the magpul on it is an E-lander mag.
- The laser could be replaced with, or used as a base for, a designator. The typically rear-heavy T97, loaded and unloaded, reaches a nice centre of gravity having this stuff mounted to the barrel.
- I tried to keep it simple, and functional, with minimal parts and weight.

Thoughts?

A couple of photos to share of the T97.ca Lower Hand Guard. Just out of machines today. 44 gram weight penalty over factory original excluding hand guard. The official LHG thread can be viewed here.

Picture all put together with everthing attached. Just wondering about the safety just not comfortable with a rifle I can't reach the safety with my thumb to maintain positive control of safety. I read that the new issue rifles to the pla have a safety located by the pistol grip. Will this feature be incorporated?

total noob question:

In a few pics I've seen AFG's and a forward vertical grip on T97's -- How are you guys attaching them?
Is there something specific I should be looking at ordering to connect up something like a vert grip or an afg? (while we wait for the t97.ca lower?)

No ones posted about how they are getting AFG's or forward vertical grips on their rifles :(

if someone finds out, can they come back and post here. I have an old AFG sitting around that would probably make the rifle more comfortable for me :)
Thanks

Zeer, you'll need to purchase a small piece of rail, 2"-4" maximum. (magpul or other brand). Fit the rail to the bottom of the lower hand guard, center it, and mark the holes. Drill said holes, and use a nut and bolt to fasten the rail to the hand guard. Attach the AFG to said rail and there you have it.

If you're not as handy with paracord, the NCStar black SKS sling fits. Not the highest quality sling, but it fits. They're like $7 on eBay.

Is there any development on a mag-release replacement? I'd love to use my left-thumb to hit a release on the rear magwell, instead of my left index around the front to reach the back-right corner. I'm right-handed. I noticed on my T97NSR there is set of notches where this should go, if you look at the QBZ-95 or QBU-88 (below). It seems as though the QBZ-97 that uses STANAG pattern mags has a extra-large magwell and they may have done this for the North American market so that the magrelease could meet the California "bullet-button" law. Look at the back of your T97 magwell, you may see the receiver has been designed for something else in mind.
