The T97 Thread!

To be honest I think my initial reason was the Tavor was too much $$

Plus looks cool.

This question is for all you T97 owners/lovers out there. What made you pick it over other red/black non restricted rifles in the market now. Having such a hard time between this or a vz58.

Why not get both? lololol. In any case, my friend got a tavor, and we wanted to be "bullpup buddies". I ended up trading in my SKS for a VZ as well, so now I have both :D.

So I own/owned Tavor, XCR, T97, VZ58, SKS etc etc.

For non-restricted shtf rifle, keeping cost in mind, I'd pick Tavor over T97 over XCR over VZ58 etc.

T97 is high on my list because of it's weight, compactness, and ability to use "high cap" ar15 magazines. It falls behind Tavor because of reliability issues. It's just not as reliable as Tavor.

The Tavor, given the limited NR selection in Canada, basically is sent here by god.

The tavor is indeed a nice piece of kit, but in handling my friend's tavor, it's actually not a nice fit for me, a bit on the large side. The type 97 fits me better, and with some slight modifications, is on par (in my experience anyways) with my friend's tavor in terms of accuracy and reliability. Out of the box though, the tavor beats the crap out of the Type 97.

They both share the same common issue of being picky with certain magazines, the type 97 being slightly pickier.

Out of the box the Tavor's trigger is atrocious, Type 97 has a better trigger out of the box by far.

This is just my experience but if you put some work into your type 97, you get something that can compare with a tavor with decent results.

Despite both being bullpups I find it almost an apples to oranges comparison.
I love both for various reasons.

Tavor, immediately optics friendly, good ergos yet chunky in the sense of thick.
T97, compactness and simplicity.

Only thing I have always dithered on is the FTU.
Can someone explain to me how the upper and charging handle come apart for disassembly?
I have a stock T97 and love it. I read every thread here on it and yet I have never seen anyone explain how to take it apart.

and

Once you have an FTU, what is the height of the rail like?
Are optic set ups that are height friendly for flat top ARs the same eye friendly height, or will I have to buy rings and mounts specific to the T97 FTU rail height?

Don't need to take off the rail for disassembly... If you do its unbolting it but I don't see why you would.

I used an AR PEPR mount for my scope and the height is great for me

Thanks Shawn. Half set.

No not worried about taking the rail off, I as wondering about the charging handle and gas piston?
Can they still come out and do I need an allen key or what?

I have the FTU rail on mine, and I have an eotech 552 attached. Perfect height and nice cheek weld. See post 611

CProducts Defense .50 Beowulf magazines fit, but are loose in the magwell, sometimes causing a FTF, not a huge issue and is fixed with a bit of tape for shimming.

Squid, what kind of tape are you using for shimming the mags and are you applying it to the front or back of the mag? I tried this myself, but found that the tape was getting worn down very quickly from inserting and removing the mag.

@squidmeister - just as easy as the original to remove for cleaning. runs great and the trigger is a huge improvement. there's significant heat transfer, so much so that i needed to buy some shooting gloves

Any high quality fabric/Velcro tape with a Strong adhesive works for shimming the spine of the magazine
