The T97 Thread!

Anybody reporting problems on the cross mags with the T97 Gen3? Went to the range yesterday and had a few jams

I have read you can easily over-insert the Cross mags into the Type 97, especially if you give them a good slap or bench rest on them, and this can cause feed problems.

Thanks! How’s the performance on them? Anything noticeable?

The Barnaul is lacquer coated steel (olive colored case) vs the polymer coated steel (grey colored case). I don't have the grey polymer stuff.

Cross mags seem to function fine, except it's not as clear when they are correctly inserted into the correct position.. I tend to visually check. The factory mag has a more positive "click" that confirms it's in by feel.

But once the cross mags are in, they cycle fine. They also drop free, and insert without any hassle in my specific Gen3.

Accuracy-wise, I'm not sure.. 25 yard indoor range and the groups were clover leaf from the bench.

Hey guys...need some advice on double feed issue with a mysterious resolution.
A strange situation occured the other day:

I insert the mag into my T97 (Gen 2) ...get off one shot and then it goes click...I look in the chamber and there are 2 fresh rounds sticking out of the chamber all mangled up, one of the bullets is pushed into it's casing and the other is not far behind...gun powder spilled all over the chamber.

So I pry them out with my needle nose pliers (wasn't easy they were jammed pretty bad)...i shrug it off as one of those weird "one offs" and I proceed to load the same mag again.
This time I don't even get off the first shot and same situation occurs.

I clear the jam again and now I'm starting to think it must be the mag.
No problem, I brought 4 extra mags.
I load the next one...same thing.
Another one...this time I get off one shot again, but followed by double feed.

So by now I'm thinking this can't possibly be the mags..they are all good mags and all of them failing at the same time is mathematically almost impossible.

So as I'm scratching my head, I figure I will load just one round into the mag to see what happens...click..nothing.
I look at the primer and there is a very weak dent in the primer...so now I'm trying to figure out if a bad firing pin could cause any of the other issues, but I'm coming up short.

At this point I should probably mention, that I was shooting from the rest (my original intention was to sight in the scope) and I made sure that there is at least 2 inch gap between the magazine and the back of the rest, but just to be sure I load 2 more and fire off hand in order to eliminate any mag touching issue...this resulted in another double feed.
At this point I'm at a loss..don't feel like taking things apart at the range (very hot that day) and I can't see anything visibly wrong.

So I'm racking, tapping and shaking this thing for a while...then I decide to give it another go off the bench.
Load 2 rounds and it fires and cycles both of them flawlessly.
So I load 5...again no hick-ups.
I proceed to load all of the magazines and there are now zero malfunctions...i fire about another 150 rounds and not a single issue (the firing pin is hitting nice and strong)

Then I notice that the safety lever is not quite in the firing position..sort of 2 thirds of the way in between maybe.

At this point, this is the only theory that I have...is it somehow possible that this whole misadventure could be caused by the safety lever being bumped and possibly moving around in between the "fire" and "safe"positions?

Needless to say, I absolutelly hate when something "fixes" itself, without understanding what exactly happened.

If anyone has an idea or a similar experience, feel free to share.
Thank you.

I typically get the round showed above the chamber and bullet pushed inside casing with some specific brand magazines. Never had double feeds.

You mentioned on one of the mags you had double feed right away, meaning it happened as you let go the bolt without it even cycling. So if for other cases you could assume that half cocked safety could impede bolt somehow, the safety wouldn't do that if you cycled manually.

My only guess now is over insertion of magazines. This could happen without resting rifle on the mag. And T97 over insertion tabs are very small and sit too high for most mags to engage them.

Yes..most of the time the double feed happened right off the bat...over insertion makes sense, but I wasn't really forcing them in there..just a gentle click really.

I'm thinking it might have been some unfortunate combination of things, where the stars were exactly alligned to do the weong thing maybe...

Just got one of the new production LHG’s from T97.ca, does anyone have a problem with the safety being stiff sometimes? I noticed that it tends to be tough to manipulate. The instruction manual mentioned an installation of a safety detent spring but mine didn’t come with one.

Other than that small issue, mine has been running great. No issues with overheating yet.

Posted this to a review thread, meant it in the sticky. From the BCL Bison picture thread, randyhub posted the following pictures of a Bison with a side-mounted M-Lok bipod, which may also work with the Type 97 -> https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2198880-BCL-Bison-picture-thread?p=18344181#post18344181

Got it off Amazon less than 80.00, it's a UTG, been on a few of my rifles, compact works great. I have Harris type bipods as well, but this one is more out of the way.

Randyhub has confirmed he is referring to the UTG Recon Flex M-LOK Bipod https://www.amazon.ca/UTG-Recon-M-LOK-Bipod-Matte/dp/B071RS3QJS

Randyhub also mentioned he suspected the bipod would work best with short magazines; decoupled Cross Mags should due nicely, for example.

The left side mag release button on my Gen 2 has been a b!tch to use. It is small, shallow, and it works only when the right edge is pressed. Mag change on the left side is painful, but on the right side is even slower.

I have just added a piece of spring steel (cut from the pocket clip of a knife) to the right side of the mag release lever. It is attached with JB Weld two-part epoxy. Now when the raised curve is pressed, the mag drops. It makes mag change easier and quicker. Since I have changed charging handle to the left, and also since the rear safety is taller than the clip, it is not likely that it gets bumped by stuff causing an accidental mag drop.

Hope that my sharing this could lead to better mods or improved design in the future.
