IDF (Israel Defence Force) PRESENTS: The New Weapon of the Special Units
The Givaty Special Unit was chosen to be the first unit to receive the newest rifle in the IDF, the Micro Tavor. This week the class of March 2008 received this prestigious rifle which will replace gradually the Micro UZI in the IDF's special units.
By the end of September the IDF launched the Micro Tavor, or as it's international name "X-95".
The officer who presented the avowedly was no other thanGeneral, Head of Central Command, Gad Shamni, who arrived wit it to the polygon and shot at the targets.
In the Israeli Ground (Land) Forces was decided to broaden the use of the rifle to all the special units in the IDF, for this purpose a pilot program was opened for the reconnaissance platoons combatants. This is to evaluate the capabilities and contribution to combat scenario with emphasis on the urban area combat.
Its size makes it an expert on the urban areas
This week the class of March 2008 received the Micro Tavor for anti terror combat training.
"Is a rifle manufactured by the Israeli Company IWI" commented an IDF officer. "Its weight is only 2.9Kg and has special attributes. In addition to supplemental instruments is an accurate assault rifle, its size makes it an expert on the urban areas. Its firing test will be with the Givaty special Unit that will evaluate its attributes thoroughly."
The officer added that the Micro Tavor has a special mechanism which enables the soldiers to use two different calibers: 5.56 mm and 9 mm. "The diversity of the calibers becomes possible whilst changing the barrel which takes only a few minutes" explained the officer. "Today the Special Units soldiers train with the UZI's for the urban area combats and assault rifles for open areas. The Micro Tavor rifle might change this problem due o its dual functionality, because of the dual caliber. Thus, increasing the professional capability of the soldier significantly.
