The first few days of our rifle deer season have been slow. I've seen a couple of does and two small yearling bucks. Not much better on trail cams, either. But the weather has been fairly pleasant, and the freezer is full from other hunts, so I am free to enjoy the hunt without any pressure, hunting with several different guns that I enjoy using.

Then the step-son calls and it looks as though he may be able to get a day or two to come over and hunt this year, so I decide that I need to repair/renovate a particular stand for him to use. That spot has become quite heavily overgrown in the past couple of years, and since I had built a free-standing elevated platform this year I decided to stick that pop-up blind on top of it and screw it down for the season. Yesterday after lunch I headed out to do just that, armed with saw, cordless drill and assorted hardware to make it happen. As an afterthought, I grabbed my blaze orange, my licence/tags, and a gun. I chose the Steyr Scout, mainly because I wanted something that worked and didn't require dicking around. I never expected to see or shoot anything, thought I might stumble across one of the omnipresent coyotes and perform a Nosleroscopy on him. :)

The project took way longer than expected...by the time everything was done, it was about 3:30, less than two hours of legal light remaining. I figured, what the hell, I'll sit here till dark. I've been making plenty of noise for the past couple of hours, nothing's going to show up. Within the next half hour, I was a bit surprised to see a couple of does and one of our familiar small bucks cross the field. At about 4:00, another doe appeared, in that weird way that they sometimes do...she was just suddenly right in the middle of the field. She was a big doe, and I casually glassed her, then swept my glasses along the far field edge behind her, 300 yards away...and then quickly dropped the binocular and raised the rifle. Bang/flop!

I've never seen this guy before, either in person or on camera. Not wide, but tall, lots of mass, big-bodied...probably the nicest deer I've ever taken off my own property. He had the thickened neck and that arrogant strut you wait all year to see. And I almost didn't bother bringing my rifle!

Nice buck... congrats.

With that narrow & tall rack that guy probably reeked havoc battling other wider/shorter bucks!

You went and shot the deer that your step-son was coming over to shoot???
Teasing of course, but don't tell him the same story you told us :)
Congrats ans cool story too.
Now, can you preform a Nosleroscopy with color photos too please?
Tight Groups,
Rob

'Rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it' is as good a reason as any to have a firearm with you in the woods.

Nice buck! I dragged a tree that blew over out of the corn field today with the tractor, cut wood with a chainsaw for about 2 hours, then walked back to the cornfield and watched a doe feeding 50 yds from where the tree was. Maybe stealth is overrated.

I never thought of that, but you're right...I'll bet that with his long reach he could do some damage by getting "inside" of an opponent's wider rack.

congrats.
do you have lots of whitetails in your area? Not too much left in SK

Not huge numbers here either, but it appears as though things are a bit better than last year. It's been warm, so I don't see that many during the day, but the cameras show more activity than last year. Another mild winter would help a lot.

That would have been a low blow...so, yes, that's exactly what I did...including calling him and sending photos! :) He's a new hunter, and I told him that whenever he shows up, any deer we find is his. I thanked him profusely for not showing up on Wednesday! :)

Congrats on a beautiful Buck!!

Strange how things work out. 3 decades ago, a friend and myself headed out to try to find a moose.
We hunted unsuccessfully till about 11 AM. So I said To Daryl....let's cut some of this dry, standing pine to take home.
May as well go home with something. So we fired up the power saw and cut a nice load of pine.

Needing a short rest, we sat down in the pickup to have a cup of coffee. Within 5 minutes, a very nice Bull Moose stands
up in the slash, about 150 yards away, right in front of us. Needless to say, he ended up in the freezer.

20 years before that, I shot a decent muley shortly after falling a tree and cutting it up for firewood. I think he was curious, and came
out to see what was going on. Good for me, too bad for him. lol.

Dave.

Nice.

Its the predator vibe. So many times i have walked in all hyped and put out that predator vibe. K's later and tired from bushwacking, walking out totally exhausted, there is the animal. No expectations, no vibe, probably drinking coffee and thinking about the evening at home. Nice flagtail, going to be hard to explain this to the son.

Very nice buck congratulations. I seen one like that on the back of my property last week. Went back that afternoon and sat in a likely spot, at 16:45 bang, one shot from the neighbours property. You guessed it he wandered over there and got himself shot. Oh' well, so far I haven't found a suitable or willing replacement.
