ever have a moment when your hunting and something changes ,light bulb goes off in your head. i had that happen 3 weeks ago in a grass blind in a field.we were set up and the geese were flaring and not commiting , they were also flying higher than usual as they were hammered for a month strait.i was shooting bbs out of a modified kicks high flyer and was nocking the odd one down.the other guys in my group were using 2s and bbs and they were just ticling them.so we started gang up on a single bird untill it we down then moved onto the next one. i had less than half a box of bbs and went into a new box of shells quarter way down .loaded the gun and the next high flock nocked the stuffing out of the bird, and the next one.i looked down at the fresh box and i accidently was shooting bbb at 1500 ft per sec.the rest of the day it was one shot one kill.we had ducks come over at some high shots and it was the same thing.was great as i was picking my shots.the others in blind were unloading on single birds knocking the odd one and they were usually not dead but bbbs were stoning them.we had a 5 person limit day for both ducks and geese.it was one of thos days you never forget. getting home and cleaning birds i found the breasts shot with larger shot only had 1 or 2 holes in them completly pass through.once in a while a bird would have smaller shot 1/4 in the brest pepered with small shot 2s and the bbs would also be not passing through.the meat with the small shot had to be picked and sliced thin to make sure none of the shot was in it or risk breaking a tooth.the big shot could not find any in the bird.also the big shot broke the wings wher the smaller shot just tickled them.these shots were all 30 yards plus more to the 45 to 50 yard range.ive learned a valuable lesson and went and bought some more bbb and have been stoning the the rest of the year.i will never go back to bbs or smaller after what ive seen.others that made the switch are getting the same results in r group.only time thyre shooting bb is when theyre out of the bbb and going to tighter choked guns.me ive got the load and choke down finally after 10 years and hope ammo manufacturers dont make a switch to improve it.ten more days to put a hurr on the greese till season closes.

Sounds more to me like you guys need to tighten up your chokes and learn to centre the front end of the bird in the pattern. We routinely kill geese clean at 40 -50 yards with #2 steel. You don't get alot of in tight shooting on Snows so most shooting is straight up at 30-50 yards. Putting a tightly grouped shot string around the head and neck by learning to shoot for the head is far more effective than leading the main mass. Focus your vision on the beak and ignore the wings and you won't need BBB. I have hunted with quite a few fellows who think that huge shot is the way to go and from my observations all they did was provide alot of long range dog handling!!

3 seperate days hunting and these were mostly ducks and geese that flared
ive got 20 days like this and like to see your 2s and 4s compare .the birds were not strait up they were 30-50 yards out then up.when they turn its kinda hard for a head shot . by the one pic is my halloween costume to take kids out for trick or treat right after a duck goose hunt. i can tell you i freaked out a lot of people walking down the street trick or treating.lots actually crossed the street and walking away .

I have shot geese and ducks with pretty much every shot possible. I prefer #2 and #4 for ducks and bb's for geese. However, i started using BBB's and T's a few years back when shooting only at geese and have liked the results. I too have found less damaged meat with complete pass throughs. But those shot sizes are definitely overkill, especially on ducks. I have dropped geese stone dead within 40 yards with #2 and 4's when using a full choke. Spank is right, tightening your choke will help with cleaner kills. I chose to switch to the kicks high flyer modified because I was finding that there was too much meat damage on some smaller ducks like woodies or teal when using a full choke. For me, the modified was a good compromise and just switch out to the larger shot sizes when the geese are coming in

i just am in the middle of switching from a modified high flyer to a patternmast code black goose .couldnt find a full highflyer. i gues ill see how it paterns on the board first. i kinda like overkill but would probably shoot bb for ducks but i mostly go after geese and get ducks as a bonus. last outing we had ducks but there was just to many coming in at once .were talking thiusands of birds.just when a large flock was going to commit some others came from the other side and flared as we did not finish the back if the blind as good as the front.everybody kept saying too much eyes.so after a hour hour of this i asked if i can take a poke at a longer range and started dropping them when they were high overhead peaking in.

What gun/choke do you need? Bass pro has a bunch of kicks high flyer chokes in stock. If you're willing to pay for shipping, i can pick one up for you and send it. I think I paid $89.99 for mine

Don't forget that Pattern Master chokes work by stripping the wad and making the shot string very short. Don't expect super tight patterns on a board, they often pattern like a basic full. In practise (or theory) they put more pellets on the bird due to the short shot string.

looking for browning gold 10 gauge choke full .have been there live close in markham.thanks for offer check them every week .called kicks there imposible to order through and ive heard of guys ordering through THERE WEB SITE MONTHS AND NOTHING

Not generally much of a different lead on the patternmasters. If you hit they die period. The use of that choke changed waterfowling for me as the shot speed is no different it's just that the shot string is very short and therefore when you hit they don't go far and my misses are generally cleaner misses than without (not inflicting the 2 or 3 pellet 1/4 mile sail very often). I've used them in Browning Benelli and Beretta shotguns with great success.

And that is not the case at all. In fact Tom Roster who is THE leading authority on shotgunning in the world has challenged these companies claims with a reward and printed retraction with photographic proof their products work as claimed. As he says they are a gimmick to sell a product. He has set up slow motion picture equipment and has tried countless times to capture these claims on film and has yet to see one instance of a successful claim.

I'm not going to wade into this debate to far because like most hunting debates there is no black and white, it is all very situational. Long and the short of it is if you get birds within reasonable distance and put pellets in their face they are going to die. I've shot geese at ridiculous distances as a couple CGNrs can attest to since they witnessed it but the cure all end all is figure out how to get the birds in tight and pellet, gun, choke decisions become almost null and void. Just my two cents

If you want the holy grail of 10 ga tight tubes buy a .720 terror tube. Should be able to get them off the wad wizard web site

Well I have been duped and feel a little stupid for it. I will no longer repeat any of these claims to others and I am going back to my fixed Improved Cylinder and the good old Poly Choke. Gimmick or not the Pattern Master does reach out there and the tightest buck shot patterns I ever saw was through a Pattern Master (off topic not waterfowl related but an observation.)

Three of us use full choked Beretta A-302s and the other uses a modified choke Wingmaster.

High flying pass shooting, out to 60 yds.

SCORE and Winchester EXPERT 3 inch 1 1/8 oz #3 and 4 steel shot.

Thanks very much!

I have done some duck hunting with mixed success, I am gonna need to tighten up my chokes.

I use a wad wizard choke tube in my browning gold 10 gauge
have found its awesome from BB through to TT shot
long range 50 to 60 yrds or short range 25 yrds to 40 yrds
knocks em stone cold dead every time
usually I use dryloc t shot
closer range I have many geese that are totally decapitated
