You didn't just breakdown and "pick it up," you sought it out (WTB ad)... but I get that... the rational often goes something like this; "Hey, if I had a stainless No.1 in .45/70, I could get rid of the .38/55 & .405 Win & maybe even the 9.3X74R... now "that" is economy!"

As I said; "one step back, two steps forward." Unless of course, you can't bring yourself to follow through on the sale of the .38/55, .405 & 9.3... then it is just, "one step back!"
 
I voted 300 win mag, but 338 win mag would be just fine, too. I think if we spent more time shooting and less time talking about it we'd all be better off for it.

Funny...22 years ago my father bought a M70 Classic Super Grade in 300WM for just that reason when hunting on the Barrens north of YK. I guess Darwin was on to something with the Origin of Species. Grizzlies are evolving too.

You're not supposed to point out a junky's habits! Unless I'm already at intervention. Let me believe they followed me home and I had no choice in the matter, never mind the Kimber .308 wanted post either...

I have always wanted to go full Grant Hadwin and take a mountain goat with an iron sighted mauser in a snow storm. I also hope to take a buffalo someday, but I think that would be a good excuse for a new rifle, not an excuse to hot load a 30-06.

Ok I'm up to speed with you, and no the .300 WSM and Win Mag are dead equal, not a .308 / .30-06 situation.

Indeed in my case I don't "count" target rifles, and have a slew of builds for the range. Those I don't mind shuffling through each range trip and I'll build a 12lb .300 with a 29" barrel for the range.

Hey, no sense in owning things you don't need, seems good common sense to me not Ontarian. :cheers:
 
Why is it that people like you seem to compare apples to pears and think that you actually just made a valid comparison? What is the energy at 300 yds when the 300 win mag shoots the same bullet at it's standard or max velocity? I'm sure you could find a handload recipe on the internet for a 130 gr bullet travelling at 1000 fps from a 300 WM and then tell us that a 223 is actually a far superior round because it carries more energy at 100 yds.

The 9.3x62 isn't a choice, too bad. But, 30-06 can be loaded to legal energies for anything on the continent, so it has my vote.

Pretty decent selection of .366" bullets from 232gr to 320gr, probably more if you talk nice to Marshall. And the 250gr Accubond is a pretty slippery bullet. All that said, the 9.3 wouldn't be the best all around NA rifle when the vistas open up. But headed into the mountains after a mixed bag it wouldn't be the worst choice either.
 
In first getting a, .366 Wagner, I anticipated a 'bit' of load testing and picked up a decent selection of bullets for that purpose. The first bullets, actually obtained before I got the rifle, were the 285gr prvi.



Pleasantly suprised by the initial accuracy of my handloads with them,:redface: I have yet to 'try' any of the others as I feel I'd be hard pressed to surpass my initial results..

lol ... we have friends that are using it with rws ks 247gr for chamois and the real corsican mouflon and they have nothing bad to say ... we have the accubond that is really stretching the 9.3x62 limits without that much correction so really the 9.3x62 is not far from being the ultimate caliber for NA ...

Although not quite as popular as the .366 Wagoner :rolleyes: I can see Ardent's point. I'm just poking a bit of fun at JP. lol

A rifle cartridge that could be flexible for any North American terrain is the ideal here.
