The Viet Cong would have LOVED my SKS!

Well I'll be, that did not work at all.

Grumble, mumble, damn kids with their technological skills. I should say thank you for the help! The ammo shown (left to right) is Prvi Partisan spire points, Hornady SST and Tula hollow points. I will be testing these out in a head to head test to see which one is most accurate. I have put just over 50 rounds of SST ammo through "Big Red", no malfunctions yet. It is a true blue Franken-rifle with only matching bolt and receiver. Stock and magazine have different numbers. It shoots very well however, The SST's go under 2 inches every time at 50m and with only one three shot group at 100m going just over three inches I am VERY happy with this Para.

Upcoming mods: ejection port mod so I can mount a low power bush scope and I am going to buy an ammo sleeve and insert a bit of padding to give a slightly better cheek/stock rest. I am tempted to buy a one inch "recoil" pad to increase length of pull.

What were they fighting about the northern border with china or was it more than that.

Just disputed territory. Vietnam was a French colony before the American showed up in '63. And China was embroiled in civil wars through most of the 18th & 19th century until the communists took control of the country in '49. They were both too busy with other issues until 1979. Looks like now it's heating up again, but in the Gulf of Tonkin where Vietnam, China and the Phillipines all laying claims to a bunch of islands for the potential oil & gas in the area.

I assure you, it has become my favourite rifle! The balance of the para model over the "regular" length model has to felt to be believed/understood. Just fantastic. Now, should I have my gunsmith thread the muzzle.....so I can put a super-stealthy suppressor on?? It would throw the balance off a bit, but.....

I remember my first SKS (about a decade ago), I had it with me in the Urewera National Park where I was possum trapping. After a week of continuous rain the stock started feeling spongy! It still shot fine though....!

that's incorrect .

Vietnam invaded Cambodia to over throw pol pot's Khmer Rouge , china was an ally of pol pot , they thought if they attacked the northern border it will force Vietnam to move it forces out of Cambodia and to protect Hanoi and its northern border .

china wanted Vietnam influences contained after the war with the US.

just to clarify china did use mostly AK in the battle with Vietnam , unfortunately the smaller amount of SKS did not do well in the hands of inexperience soldiers , remember the Vietnamese been fighting since the 50s against the French, American and cambodian, and the Chinese hasn't fought since the Korean war so yeah , even thought they manage to take over some border villages , china knew they couldnt hold on to the territories if the heavy experience nva soldiers arrive from Cambodia.

Although the VC used 'Red rifles' from Mosin Nagant to AK, by far the weapon "used heavily" was the AK. It's also the main reason why the Chinese ditched the SKS after the Vietnam-China war of 1979-1980 when the Vietnamese army, using AK, caused a great deal of Chinese casualties, who were using SKS.

I apologize to bazza for hijacking this thread and going off topic.
You are correct for the most part. In the late 70's when we were at the height of the cold war, Vietnam had over a million men army (almost a million and a half if my memory is correct). I fail to see a border skirmish of a few kilometers deep will make the Vietnamese to pull their army out of Cambodi. Anyhow, they did and installed a puppet regime.

China has been agressive with its neighbours regarding territory for years. Let just agree to disagree on this point.

To be fair, I can rock my Para SKS on my regular "A" category license- this allows me up to the magic 7 rounds (maximum). If I want to go up to "free standing pistol grips" and 30 round mags I have to apply for an "E" category. Not that expensive, but you kind of need a reason to have it (and you have to buy a better safe with 6mm thick walls). "Pest control" as a reason usually gets you through. Self defence with firearms in NZ is not really allowed, but some fella did get away with it recently. In fact, a gun shop manager/owner shot some loser in the belly with a 1911 .45 ACP a few years ago and he didn't go to jail. But he had to spend a lot of money on defence. Having said all that, NZ is nowhere near the USA state of Georgia with their "Guns Everywhere" legislation.

so what are your handgun laws like?

To own a handgun (asides from the criminal fraternity who have no rules!) you have to join a pistol club. After six months membership you can then purchase a handgun (after the police have spoken to your spouse, employer and/or family to ensure you a'int some crazy SOB). You may ONLY use the handgun at the club. You cannot go runnin' round hog hunting with your Glock 21 (but I reckon some of the guys do anyway). You must attend the pistol club twelve times per annum. Your pistol must be kept in an approved safe (6mm thick steel and good locks). You can only transport the pistol while going to and from the club. So this means you can't "accidently" have your S&W .44 Magnum in your pack while you are "tramping" in hog country..... so it is pretty restricted, unlike those crazy americans where handguns are mandatory in: church, school, movies, bars, home, etc!!!! God Bless America.
