So i will not make friends with this post at all but that is ok, not trying to be hateful or mean to anyone just trying to bring something to light that i feel has lost its meaning and is used without any real thought as a way to add another $1000 it seems or more to a rifle.

The word my friends is "Custom" now my line of thinking is that you can only use this word if your "build" consists of a aftermarket barrel, action, trigger and stock and coating to the finish of the stock or other materials(ceracoat /duracoat)and i would add another caveat that all of this MUST be assembled by a rifle builder of some nature by order to your specifications. i would stretch it in limited situations such as using factory actions and after market components that is understandable and generally accepted for some semi-custom rifles.

What in my mind is not a appropriate use of the word "custom" is a stock rifle having a chassis and muzzle device of some nature added or a bipod and attaching the word custom to it or a off the shelf rifle with a rattle can spray paint job and calling it "custom". i don't want to rant on as it becomes very distasteful and losses the desired effect i will leave you with the definition for the word and allow your imagination to run wild, again not trying to start a fight or hurt anyone's feelings.

the term I think for Custom guns put together with off the shelf parts on the kitchen table is IKEA TYPE LOL.Lots of kustom ruger 10-22s /sks ect out there

I don't know if you will make any friends or not but here are some of my customs and higher end factory offerings lined up for a glass review I'm writing. Figure they pass your test ??

Custom to me is an item that has been specially made from a custom shop by the gun maker..

Adding things to a gun doesn't make it a custom rifle..

When I look through the EE and see the word custom, I just pass over the add..

I think that adding pieces to a rifle should be named customized..

I am looking for a Remington Sendero 300 RUM from the custom shop..

You can see where the word custom use can make a difference..

Good thread on this subject..

Custom has been overused since the early hotrod days.
Never going to change its improper usage , just educate newbies that an SKS in a Tapco stock with a rattle can camp job and NC Star scope arrangement is not custom.
Custom to me is a Cooper made to my specs in every way including serial number.

Modified is what I did to my mosin. It is however now a 1 of a kind! I would use the word customized as I had a part built for it, and machining done. it is not however a custom ordered rifle as such posted above.

I totally agree. Drives me crazy when I see "Custom" and it's still got the factory barrel. Also "Custom should not be used with a factory action.

There are many words that have lost their true meaning over the last several years.
Custom, Tactical, Build is grossly over used as there are VERY few that are truly capable of turning raw materials into finished products.
My pet peeve is the word Hero. It seems to be used for just about everyone who ever got out of bed in the morning since 911. My question is what will we bestow on someone like Audie Murphy?

"a custom guitar"[/QUOTE]

Back in the 1970s I took a stock Colt 1911; replaced the short factory trigger with a longer trigger, the arched mainspring housing with a flat one, and the factory grip safety with an "beavertailed safety. I then had a pistolsmith replace the small factory sights with larger fixed sights, do a trigger job, and polish the ramp for better feeding. Then later I had another pistolsmith work on my Browning Hi-Power: Sights, magazine safety, thumb safety, trigger job, over all action fitting, and finally had it hard chrome finished.

I consider both guns customized, though one less so than the other.

Custom (as an adjective) = made specially for individual customers.

Customer = a person who purchases goods or services from another; buyer; patron.

I am assuming one could argue that the act of having a recoil pad installed to a specific length would qualify as a custom stock... but many would say that is carrying it to extremes, but that is where the words denotation and connotation become important. It depends on the individuals perception.

The bottom line is does it really matter?

Custom built =/= customized.

Honestly, this is one of those questions which should probably just be ignored and I am truly ashamed that I haven't done so. I feel like I've been caught watching The Bachelor. I consider my own rifles to fit better into the category of "homemade" although some might consider them to be custom. Some makers produce rifles which are undeniably custom as a matter of course. Others do so on occasion. The custom shops of Winchester, Remington, and others produced many rifles which were truly custom rifles back in the day. Later, they just produced standard rifles which cost more. Ultimately, to the question of "what is a custom rifle?" the best answer is "Who gives a ----!"

LOL... pet peaves... I have em.

And the word "Build" is another one. Like its a house or something.

I built = I tinkered.... or maybe fiddled.... But tinkered or fiddled doesn't sound enough like work to justify the ridiculous prices we often pay for our "Builds"

Heck right here on CGN guys post stuff about their over the counter Rem 700 under Target and Precision rifles. Geeze Loueeeze.... that's another one.

Worse than that is the 24 hour special pricing in the ee gets me every time.....its used and hasn't sold yet so somebody will drop the price for 24 hours only and then what raise it back up to the price it wasn't selling at? That and brand new in box....only 50 rounds test fired. Hahaha

custom is sometimes used to justify an inflated price, however , the upgrades may not be what most buyers are looking for. the unwanted upgrades are discounted, if the buyer is still interested. if they have to be replaced, even worse, the price drops more. the more custom, the fewer buyers there are.

You mean that Custom Sniper SKS 762x39 doesn't make the cut???
Lol
Yes, i agree the words get taken way out of context. The only thing i may offer a difference of opinion is if one puts together a rifle, i.e., buys all the parts separate (for example Krieger, Timney, Macmillan etc) - but - chooses to put all the aforementioned on a m700 or Savage action (which you can buy separate) it is still a custom in my eyes. not much mainstream about a rifle if the only thing 'factory' is the action...
As many people have shown, good (re: tweaked) m700 and Savage actions can hold their own with the best of them.

But by Geez boys....looks like we all need to get out shooting soon!
