They're After LAR Mags Too.

Since all the LAR-15 pistols have now been prohibited how does that affect the classification of the LAR-15 10 round pistol magazines? I presume that since when they were restricted the mags were not, the same would apply if prohibited.

There have been other threads about this, but I’ll post this here as well.

The LAR-15 pistol and magazines were approved by the RCMP in 2008 (I think). That made the LAR-15 pistol a commonly available pistol in Canada once stores started stocking it. The LAR pistol mags were deemed to be designed specifically for the LAR-15- hence why they all have the same inscription on the side.

As of May 1st, the LAR 15 pistol can no longer be sold in Canada. That makes the pistol no longer commonly available. That means the LAR 15 pistol mags are limited to 5 rounds. It’s a weird law, but law none the less.

The argument could be made to what does commonly available mean. That could produce a grey area for the 2 years of the amnesty, but considering the pistols now must be stored in your safe and cannot even be transported- I think commonly available is pretty clearly not what the LAR 15 pistol is now.

Joseph, Jesus, Mary, and Christ. And..the Keltec PLR16 10 round mags have no markings on them to indicate they're pistol mags for the PLR-16. Makes one wonder if the 20mm bore thing was an oversight or a 12 gauge window.

I was considering the reasoning why the Libs went after the XCR as well as the AR-15, and came up with something that may or may not have come up on this forum already.

Assuming this BS ban goes through, in two years the LAR-15 pistol and XCR micro pistol will no longer be "a pistol, commonly available in Canada" and therefore, the mags that go along with them will no longer be exempted from the rifle magazine 5-round restrictions.

Say goodbye to 10 round mags.

I was wondering this too!

With this logic, the only rifles left using AR mags would be the mossberg and ruger bolt guns. So technically properly marked 30 round mags would be good to go.

Explain your logic.

What i'm saying is his logic of "the legality of the magazine is based on the legal availability of the firearm it is made for" would mean that if all semi-autos using AR mags were prohibited the only firearms legally available to use AR mags would be bolt and pump rifles with no mag limit.

It's not the case at the moment but I don't think it is a viable logic because I doubt 30 round ar mags would ever become legal if they were only available for bolt guns.

Unfortunately that’s not how it works. The magazines are classified based on the firearm they were designed for, and LAR 15 mags are designed for LAR 15 pistols, and AR 15 mags are designed for the AR 15 rifle.

That’s how we were able to use the pistol mags in our rifles, and have more than 5 rounds in them. It’s also why, though, it can’t work the other way with a bolt action rifle and unlimited rounds.

I'm not following your logic. If LAR mags have a cap of 10 rounds because they're designed for a handgun, and AR15 mags have cap of 5 rounds because they're designed for a semi rifle, then why wouldn't mags designed for, say, the PAR15, a pump action rifle, have an unlimited cap?

Because the PAR uses AR mags.

If the PAR added ONE thing that could differentiate the mags, like ar mags wont fit etc- you'd be golden. Unfortunately it uses standard AR mags- says so right in the ads. Standard ar mags at 5 rounds.

As a strange aside, I was talking to a plumbing supply company today, and he said I was the 8th person this week to call about large dia pipe with endcaps. Sure must be a lot of irrigation going in.

I'd rather it dewatted, than 6 ft. under. At least I can fondle and polish it at my convenience, without resorting to manual labour, to dig it up.:p
