I read this post on another forum this morning:
Welcome to the world of hunting with the ill-informed, unskilled, 1,000 yard marksman. If you’re not into reading disturbing rants, no offense intended to you or anyone else, please consider reading another thread. Absolutely none of this is pointed at the good folks who come here with honest questions after they’ve done a bit of research themselves and seek some educated guidance. Bless every single one of them for asking because they want to do the right thing.
But some of this is just plain upsetting.
On the always-true internet today I read the following on various hunting / shooting forums (Seriously, I did. My computer monitor is large enough to do a split screen. So I copied from the post on the left and pasted it into a Word document on the right):
“I want to shoot an elk at 1,000 yards. What should I buy? A .243, a .308 or a 30-06? I heard the.243 was best because it shoots the flattest.” A You-Tube watcher for sure.
“165 gr 30 caliber bullets are not suitable for deer. 180 and 200 grain are the best.” This from an individual who was posting reloading formulas and condemning the various .270 calibers as “useless.”
“There’s nothing the .270 WSM can do that the .280 Remington can’t do better.” Really? You sure about that?
“I can reload my 7mm-08 up to the same speeds as your 7mm Remington Magnum.” Can I watch this test? From over there on that hill?
“Accuracy at the range is just plain overrated. If I can hit a running deer at 100 yards, so can you!” Uhhhhhhh,………..no comment.
“Expensive bullets are a waste of money. Buy the cheapest ammo you can find. They always work for me on moose!” This must’a been Homer What’s’hisface.
“There aint no difference between scopes. Trust me, expensive ones just cost more and don’t work no better.” Likely taken from an El Cheapo Gun Shop 50% off coupon.
Discussing wolves – protected in some states: “Shoot it in the guts so it’ll just go off somewhere and die and no one will know.” My revulsion after reading this,………our Moderator will delete my comments for sure.
“If you’re looking for a good, long range elk rifle, get yourself a .260 Remington. It shoots flatter and hits harder than a 30-06.” Where do you start with a statement like this?
I had to think about whether or not I would post these comments here. Not sure why but I have. Just depressing.
