Hello Fellow CGN Members,

I have been considering getting an SKS for some time now. Wanted to ask the SKS owners and collector's what kind of things to look out for. Specifically:

  • Are there particular factories of production where the models were high quality?
  • Are there particular years of production to look for?
  • And finally, any advice on how to treat the wooden stock to give it a different stain?

I very much like the finish and overall appearance of the Yugoslavian SKS M59/66 with the muzzle formed into a spigot-type grenade launcher, and folding bayonet. Would really like to be able to have a similar wood finish. An image of this model is available on Wikipedia:

Thanks in advance!

What is there to consider ? They sell for a pittance, buy a crate full and don't worry about what the wood finish is like, it does not matter. They are military rifles built for killing not for looking pretty.

Dont buy one !

Buy a few. They are the best thing since sliced bread. Minimum moving parts, mine has never let me down. If your able to change a lightbulb you can look after it yourself and they are dirt cheap to buy and feed. The wife can tear hers down and clean it in less than 5 minutes and shes not rushing, She can also hit 4 out of 5 soda bottles at 100 yds, so they are a little more accurate than you read on here.
I have a few guns, but the SKS will always be my SHTF gun. Forget collector value and just get a nice Russian with a shiny bore and your good for the next 50 years.
Did I mention SKS is FUN spelt in Russian...maybe ...well it should be :)

They are extreme fun, most are not the accurate, but still tons of fun for the money. The Russian ones are claimed to be better than the Chinese, but when you look at the overall gun, they are highly prized for shooting and not really collecting. Buy one, have fun with it, they are a blast !

if you want the wood to look like the yugo 59/66 get a yugo 59, that is the yugo model without the grenade launcher.

if you are looking for russian sks, get one with nice wood. some have nicer stocks than others. personally i believe year of production doesn't much matter, the overall condition of the rifle does.

Find one that looks good, at a fair price. They are all very similar.
As others have said:
-Cheap to buy.
-Cheap to own.
-Cheap to shoot.
-Cheap to mod.
I love mine…

Prince, Bite the bullet! I decided to jump into the SKS world yesterday (or should I say Broke the news to my wife) and bought 2 today!!! LOL.. A 53 Tula and a 49 Tula from Westrifle. As NIKE says, Just Do It!!

You can't go wrong. Get an SKS and have fun. You're gonna own a few anyway, so get started!!!

Tell Me about it! I bought number one, then bought a DAMN 49 in the same day!! LOL, but that will not be a shooter, and will only go up in value... (AT LEAST THATS WHAT THE WIFE WILL HEAR!!) HA HA HA

Now, I cannot find the others I am gonna need for the collection till I make a CC payment!! HA HA

Don't over think it. Just buy one. I thought "wtf would I want a $200 milsurp for?" but then...wth, bought one and they're great! I should buy another. :)

Wish I woulda stuck with the regular milsurp SKS for $200.. Oh who am I kidding, Bought my milsurp shooter today for 2 bills then had to buy another, just do it! Does Not Matter if its Russian, Chinese, Yugo or whatever!!! Once you do it, it will not be your only one you will buy! I HAVE to have 8 more now, one of each year of Russian, and maybe a Chinese just to round out the bunch. But thats gonna have to wait for a few months(weeks)

They are addictive, I thought about getting one at Christmas time, now I have five of them. Just buy the cleanest ones you can find, although from what Ive seen is that there isn't a lot of difference between them.
they are all pretty good.
