Thinking about picking up a 222. rem

Stumbled across a real nice little anschutz 900 in 222. rem and the thing shoots like a dream, fantastic little groups with a beautiful trigger. The price is fair but i just dont know what ill use it for. I have a 204. ruger and a 243. win. The 222. rem i guess i would use as a back up or even a fun little plinker. I do reload already so its not like im worried about ammo prices, or availability!

Anyone want to through some opinions on the caliber and what you guys think of it?
 
Sure, I'll comment. Merely one of the best little cartridges ever designed! Held oodles of Benchrest records until the 22BR & 6mmBR came along.

The only reason the 223 Remington is more popular today is the military connection. [5.56mm NATO]

I have owned several, and at present have a very accurate 222 in a Remington 700 "Classic"

Doesn't have the clout of a 243, and is not as flat as the 204, but in it's own little niche, it's just plain fun to shoot. Easy on barrels and cheap to load for.

I love the 222 Remington. I think you should buy that Anschutz 900. Dave.
 
I love my .222 while everyone else shoots 223 or 204s, no fox has ever argued, sure the others might shoot a tad flatter out an extra 50m but that's no issue with me.

222 loaded with a 40gr bullet 3564fps 204 loaded with a 40 gr bullet 3700 fps how fast does it have to go to kill a gopher of I want to embarace the 204 I'll load my 220 swift with 40 gr bullets 4200 fps . It's all a matter of preference
 
I've shot everything from gophers to a wolf with mine.

Never been disappointed with terminal results, easy to handload for, many wonderful and classic varmint bullets to choose from and are very easy to find. (SPSX, Calhoons, Hornet bullets, etc)
One great centrefire cartridge to graduate novice shooters to, when they have had a beginner's training with rimfire firearms.
More accuracy then many of us need without punishing recoil forces.

I've got a book written by Colonel Crossman regarding Olympic shooting sports since 1896.
The last running wild boar event that used centrefire category was often won with the Remington 760 rifle in caliber 222 Remington. Any repeating action could be used excluding semi-autos.
Anschutz bolt action repeaters chambered in the 22 Hornet was the only other decent contender in this event.

The only Mini-14 that an owner bragged about and coveted in the mid 1980s was chambered in this cartridge. He ignored several generous offers to purchase it from his platoon/company buddies because it was the family farm varmint rifle with many one shot successes on chicken eating critters just outside London, Ontario.
 
Grab it. You can get many bargains on rifles in .222 because it has fallen from favour in the general public. I picked up a BSA .222 Regent so chambered for $350 a few years back. A dandy little rifle in a great chambering and almost always VERY accurate.
 
Okay that settles it, ill try and grab it early next week or maybe on the weekend. Like i said price is right, escpecially since i was able to get a few shots out of it first. 300 dollars is all they want, and he was shooting the 50gr power points and i sent 9 rounds into a staggard little hole with the 10th opening her up.

fired a little 3 shot group and there all touching about an inch low of center.

I would buy that in a heart beat if it was a lefty. You might find the 204 gets benched!!! A very fine rifle cartridge combo.
 
Back in the late seventies I purchased a Remington 222. I think it is called a Mohawk 600, I could be wrong. What a great firearm. The 222 is very loud and fast. A few things may be faster, but not by enough to matter. You should be able to pick the hairs off of a gopher with a 222. I still have it.

I don't know about the 204. Ruger being bench lol it quickly won me over for favortiee varmint caliber!! I'm hoping that the little 222 will make a nice back up, cheap reloading and use it to test the limits on this round. It has a taco fixed 6 with a target reticle, why someone throw it on I don't know. I will be takin the stock off to refinish it, and mounting a new optic on it. I'd love to see how it does at 300-400+ on crows and such game. The little 204 continues to amaze me.
 
I love the .222 Rem... it was a favorite for 20 years and suddenly I found myself without one (not sure how that happened)... I was heavily invested in .223 Rem in numerous platforms... but wanted a Ruger No.1-A in a .22 cal and after years of searching for the elusive No.1-A in .223, I almost caved last year and bought one of the .222's being offered this year by Ruger... and then suddenly a No.1-A. 223 fell into my lap... and so I am still without a .222.
 
Never had a yote say "dang, got myself kilt by a .222... wish it had been a .223..."

It does just fine.
 
Everything I've read is pretty much a rave review about the inherent accuracy of the 222. As noted, it was the advent of the .223 with the military that ultimately doomed it. The difference between the two afield isn't worth mentioning.

And, an Anschutz for $300...???????? What, did he run over it with a truck or something??? These are fantastic rifles of superb quality!
