I'm toying with the idea. Anyone got info as to what the best platform is to build on, and did I read somewhere suppressors were illegal? If I can't have a suppressor it wouldn't be much of a "Whisper" would it

Are you new to firearms in general?

In a sport where the non-shooters see us criminals, you might want to polish up and learn your rights/laws. It'll only benefit you.... and make your head spin. lol

I just got my barrel, the reamer is on order as are the dies...........I will be looking for brass shortly as well as an action.
I am torn between a short action or a long action, for me single loading is fine, feeding from a mag is not a necessity.........

I will be shooting 850 grain cast and everything I have read leads me to believe that a 15 twist barrel will work for subsonic loads and lead, if your going to be shooting jacketed then your going to want a 8 or 9 twist barrel. I was offered a 38 inch 15 twist blank and couldn't say no, but I am only going to be needing half of it.......

Very interesting. Where did you find a cast bullet mold that will cast to .515" or whatever BMG diameter is? Custom built? I would think a long action based on a .338 Lapua case diameter would be your best bet. I don't know how you plan on getting a short action with that bolt head diameter or even if it could be done. Will the round even fit a short action well?

I've heard of guys using CZ550 actions for this cartridge. Alternatively, a Stiller single shot TAC 338 LM action would be the bee's knees.

If shooting subs all the time, you could conceivably only have to buy 100 pieces of Lapua .338 LM brass that would last you indefinitely.

The BMG is 510.......and the mold I have is also a gas check mold so speed is not a issue if I want to go to the higher spectrum. The case itself will load and eject from a short action, however if you chamber a live round and want to remove it the bolt has to be removed, this is where a long action comes into play.

I have seen one built on a Remington xcr 100 single shot........so never say never......A stiller would be a good way to go, I have time to find an action while I wait for the dies and reamer...first thoughts were a 50 thumper........easier to find brass but I like the shoulder of the whisper

so that's a .223 case?

One day yodave, I'd love to see the projects you've worked on/are working on!

that is a 270 wsm case with the neck and shoulder cut off, also known as a 50 thumper or a 50 wsm...........

I'll have to take a new picture with something else in it for size reference.......the dies are 6 months away so I have some time to find a donor action, my 38 inch barrel is going to get cut in half, so now either I build 2 .50 cal wildcats or I sell half a barrel............

tell us more about it yodave...like what's the performance of that thing (velocity, energy, etc.)

What are you planning to shoot with it? Not your typical precision rifle paper puncher...and anything atypical is interesting as hell to me.

starts out as a 338 lapua trimmed down to remove the neck and shoulder and then a new neck is formed, which has to be neck turned. shooting 647 grain ball ammo at 1050 FPS is still going at 850+ fps at 1000 yards losing only 12 percent of its original velocity. I am not sure what I am going to use it for, but I'll lob a few bullets at the 1200 yard gong just to see if we can hit it..........it's kind of one of those I don't really need it but want it anyways caliber builds............

as far as ballistics go, it really more like artillery fire so I might have to go with a 40mao base and the same in the rings time will tell, I have a while to make brass so until then I'll just keep gathering components and casting 850 grain cast bullets

Not sure what BC was used to get this velocity but subsonics operate in a different world and the BC's are actually much higher than you think. I'd bet such a big subsonic bullet hardly loses any velocity at all at 100m

This thing looks interesting. 338 bullet jammed in a cut down 223 case and it will run through an AR. So many cool ideas, so little funding to pursue them. :(

I just fixed it, should read 850 fps at 1000 yards...........

I looked at the thumper line of wildcats as well, however the headspacing on the rim like a pistol cartridge turned me off, I prefer the shoulder, that's was steered me away from the 50 thumper over to the 510 whisper, brass my be harder to find and cost more but case capacity and the shoulder are a real bonus.
