thinking of a dual purpose light recoil high performance rifle for deer and yotes.

This sort of ties in with another thread.

What distances are you planing to hunt at?

A .243 would be my choice for under 200 yards and a .270 for further. Or 6.5x55 for both.

Your millage may vary.

I bought my son a BDL SSDM Rem 700 in 6mm when he was 8. Shortened a SPS stock I got from the EE finished with a Decelerator pad. Started at 65% loads of H4895 and 87 grain Hdy SP. Bumped the powder up every 20 rounds. Finished with 80 grain TTSX @ 3400 and 55 grain NBT at 4000. Both shoot within an inch of each other at 100m. Now I'm sorting out a full house load with 75 grain VMAX. The BC of the TTSX matches the Vmax of that weight so I'm after a closer match for impact. Can't beat that for a youth shooter.

If children are use the rifle I personally would not go with .257 Wby Mag. While there is not substantial recoil, the muzzle blast could be off putting to some youth. I would go a different route. 6mm, 243, 257 Bob, all of which are under or around 10 ft/lbs recoil... 6.5x55 with lighter loads as the full house loads can go up to 12-14 ft/lbs.

All the cartridges mentioned work great out to 400 yds on yotes on deer size animals at longer yardage things change a little bit I have personally used everyone mentioned The two that I have now are a pre 64 -70 into 270 loaded with either 110gr for yotes or 130 gr for both works great shoots very flat . My second rifle is a kimber super American in 7-08 loaded with 100-120 gr for yotes and 140 gr for deer both work great as a dual purpose cartridges

257 Roberts, 25-06 and 260 are all good for what you want it for! I use a 260 for yotes and deer...even took an elk with it! 95 grain V-max for varmint, 100 grain Nosler Ptn for deer and 130 TSX for elk.
