IBES: How does that barrel weight thingy work? Does it just twist its way up and down a threaded portion of the barrel?

Mini-14 barrel weight

If you want a mini to shoot or cut the group size down by half heres what you do as I did on one.A magazine artical gave the weight away on one they tested as about 21 1/2 to 22 oz.I machine from stainless solid round stock a barrel weight about 4" lomg and an inch/inch and a half in diameter.Drilled it out and reamed it so as a slight interference fit with the barrel.removed the stock sight, started shortning it in a lathe and weighing it after each cut until I got it down to the weight as stated.Warmed it up with a propane torch, applied a little ble locktite and slide it on.Note that i back bored the
weight approx a inch or so to set the distance on the front of the barrel. The end result was a cool looking rifle, better balanced and now shot groups in about an inch and 1/2.It controls the barrel vibrations or the amount that the barrel actually whips when fired.----Thanks--Dieseldog!

Most of the time people who complain about the accuracy of the mini-14 are usually the sole problem themselves.

Remember...
1-Ruger has different twist rates for the barrels in the Mini - if you dont shoot the right ammo you will not stabilise the bullet. Most people just go to the store and purchase 223 Rem bullets and go bang away. Not correct, do some research about the .223/5.56 and choose the correct Wt (45-70gr) for the barrel on your Mini.

2-Dont be a Rapid Fire guy. The barrel gets hot - as does any barrel that you quickly run 100s of bullets through. As the Minis barrel overheats you do loose accuracy. The older models had a thinner barrel that did lead to a wider group after lots of shots in sequence.

"...I bought a Mini-14 a couple of weeks ago off another CGNer and I finally got out to the range and shot it today.....It's very fun to shoot...but it doesnt have that great accuracy....The first 20 shots were pretty accurate but as the barrel got hot the shots definitley started to wander..."
That's why I installed a barrel stabilizer strut on mine:

Yes, that's a non-restricted 580 series Mini-14 ...slightly modified.

Do tell, Terry. Where might one obtain one of those?

It certainly looks great. Does it work too?

Aside from the actual 'factory' Mini-14 (which I bought from S.I.R.), there were several aftermarket components that took me a few months to locate/acquire from different sources in order to assemble the rifle that you see in the pic ...which was just as well, because this turned out to be one of those "...if you had to buy it all at one time, you probably wouldn't have done it..." projects.

To the best of my knowledge, nobody out there is selling Mini-14s modified like this as a complete package.

It's also worth noting that nothing was done to the rifle to change its 'non-restricted' status ...no ATT required to bring it to and from the range (y'gotta like that).

Here we go again...

Well, I just bought another one this morning. Damn thing pert' near jumped off the rack into my arms as I walked by it in my local shop. It's the Ranch Rifle version, so I'll be interested to see how it shoots.

Pardon me. (My question was not specific enough.)

Where might one obtain one of those "barrel stabilizer strut"s?

And did it influence the rifle's accuracy?

O'rly? :D

Same as what hfp75 said
I have an older Mini 14, I put some aftermarket wilson peep sights on it, when I'm using 69gr BTHP it shoots 1 HOLE at 50 meters for a 3 shot group.
I agree that not all were excelent rifles, but if you get one experiment with it first before throwing it away. I have a folding stock on mine and makes an excellent varmint truck gun!

any idea why the barrel of mine gets very hot only after a few rounds fired?

i use American Eagle in it and sometimes Remington UMC
