Thinking of getting RUGER Mini-14 .223

I'm a new guy here but I can help you with the barrel strut. Check out PerfectUnion BBS. They've got a ton of info on the Mini-14. A member there named Kkina has designed the strut and selling them from that site. I've had my Mini for over 20 years and love it. It always hits what I aim at and always goes bang. Thats all I need.

The one that you see on my rifle:

That accustrut looks pretty good and the website does a good job at marketing the accessory. I would be interested to try one if there was a Canadian importer.

teclaydon - did you find that the accustrut tightened up groups even more than the slip-on flash hider or did the FH have a greater impact (or were both added on at the same time) ?

I've had 2 Mini-14's. My first was a 180 series in stainless steel when they were first introduced. I sent the rifle out to have the stainless steel receiver drilled and tapped for scope mounts, then mounted a 3X9 scope on it. I got 2inch groups at 100 yards consistently. With iron sights, I could hit a dinner plate consistently at 250 yards.

I used it for years, never had a misfeed, or any kind of a problem with it. I sold it in 1983 when I needed the cash. Remember 1983? 22% interest rates, unemployment double digits. I wish I had of kept it.

I bought my second 181 series from Mil-Arm in the early 90's. Genuine folding stock with flash supressor. Never scoped it. I've shot thousands of rounds with it, never had any kind of a problem with it. Not the greatest accuracy, but I'm fond of it. I use surplus .223 and can plink all day and not break the bank.

Yes, they are kind of high priced for the accuracy, but I like them! They look good and they are dependable. Not legal for hunting, not an effective game cartridge and other negatives, but the fun I've had with them has made me feel every cent I've spend on them worth it.

The barrel stabilizer that you see installed on my Mini-14 is NOT an 'AccuStrut', it is a similar product called a 'HarBar':

When you compare pictures of both products, the 'HarBar' seems more robust and better constructed than the 'AccuStrut' (IMO). If the 'HarBar' that I received is any indication, it is certainly well made.

I also had the metal work on the rifle and the various accessories - including the stock - refinished with baked-on Teflon. I've since replaced the Trijicon sight with a Leupold VXII 1-4x 20mm scope because I found the 6 MOA dot on the Reflex sight too large for doing target shooting at 50 yards and beyond.

"...Still waiting for a range report, Terry..."

Here's a target that I shot during my last trip to the range from 50 yards using a bipod, 1-4x 20mm VXII and Remington UMC 55gr ammunition:

After a 'life total' of 400 rounds or so through the rifle, there have been no incidents of FTF or FTE. As far as accuracy is concerned, it improves the more that I shoot ...which I attribute more to the shortcomings of the person behind the trigger rather than the rifle or its ammunition.

I liked mine. It was the first .223 I ever had and it would take the gophers out at 75 yards in spectacular fashion. Back in those days you could own high cap mags without some eastern liberal turd burglar wetting his pants, and I had a couple of 30's for mine.

Contrary to the guys, mine would shoot circles around an SKS and so would the ones my buddies had. But they do begin to spray when they get hot.

"The Mini is a good, though perhaps not great, rifle."

Apparently this thought can be expressed in tens of thousands of different ways.

Now there is a line that screams to be used as a sig....particularily by us old farts....:dancingbanana:

is it normal that the barrel gets got pretty fast or is it because of the ammo?

what ammo does it like best?

The barrel on the Mini-14 is spec'd thin to keep the rifle light ...the downside is that it tends to heat up quickly (so yes - for this particular rifle - a hot barrel is 'normal').

Terry...
Cool edit...
Guys joining late, go back up to post #91 for a bi***in' profile view...
That's the look....!

MINI 14 & AR15 Comparisons
Mini 14 - No hot gases are dumped into the bolt. So the bolt is not over come by excessive heat! Also there is no carbon to build up and lock up the bolt!

AR15 - Hot gases are dumped into the bolt to say the least and carbon will build up if not regularly cleaned causing a malfunction and or cease to operate condition.

Mini 14 - All steel receiver and case hardened to a thickness of at least .020"

AR15 - 75% aluminum alloy with the critical parts steel

Mini 14 - Open bolt design is a close copy of the M14. The open bolt is very forgiving when it comes to dirt, dust or sand. The rifle clean or dirty just keeps ticking and ticking.

AR 15- Closed bolt design. Just ask our troops about the plastic baggies they need to use to keep the sand from jamming up there rifles.

Mini 14 - Self cleaning gas system no buffer tube to collect moisture or dirt and lock up the buffer system.

AR 15- Must be field stripped to clean trigger compartment, Buffer system, Bolt & carrier and gas tube system.

Mini 14 - compact, versatile, and doesn't take up much space.

AR15 - Large bulky

Mini 14 - Field strips in seconds. Pop the trigger guard and the rifle practically dismantles it self.

AR 15- Definitely slower to disassemble.

Mini 14 - Now here the AR has an advantage over the Mini. Out of the box ACCURACY!

AR 15 - Out of the box ACCURACY!

Mini 14 - But here we can help! We can turn your Mini 14 into a rifle that will shoot right next to an AR15 after one of our conversions is completed. Now that we have discussed the pros and cons of the rifles you would have to say the Mini definitely has some advantages and we can take care of the disadvantages!

Accuracy Systems, Inc.

I have been searching the Accuracy Systems site for the last year or so I just emailed them asking about thier Mini 14 # 018 package that they have listed for just over $1400.00.

They have told me that they have an exporter that they are using for shipping into Canada.

They are guaranteeing sub MOA (1.040") 100 yard groups with this package...

I really liked their package # 012 but it weights over 10lbs which way heavier than I want for a rifle like this but they are guaranteeing 1/2" MOA @ 100 yards with this package...

Looks like I am going to be having an accurate Mini in my future for winter predator hunting and year round plinking fun...

I had been looking at the Mini 14 Target but just can't get around that flipping ugly barrel weight.
