thinking of joining the Savage 99 cult

Good morning everyone,

I stumbled across this thread last week and have just now gotten around to posting my Savage 99. I'm not sure if it's a 99-H or 99 Carbine, or a 99 something else... It has a 20'' round barrel, carbine butt, slim foreend without checkering, and is chambered in 3030win. Serial # indicates DOM as 1925 according to online sources. I bought this from a close friend a few years back after he got it from an estate sale. It's incredibly accurate, last fall I put 3 shots in 1.5'' @ 100yds while confirming zero as I carry this sometimes for whitetail in brush.

Can anyone tell me more about this rifle based on photos?

Thanks,

John

You certainly got a very nice one. Lucky guy…

Going over my "new to me" 1899, notice it was looking kinda black on the inside.
Thought I'd get into a field strip and do a good cleaning before going to the range.
Not sure this puppy has been cleaned in 110 years. Yikes!

Kept going and it just got worse...think it's time for a ultra sound bath...or two.

I don't get how anyone can say the Winchesters are better than the Savage? Definitely not prettier.

I was wondering when you might pop up. Beautiful rifles. What are specifics of the second one from the bottom? better yet what are the specifics for all of them. I'm drafting my Christmas wish list so I want to get it right!

I love mine! I’ve got one in 300 Savage and a nice 1928 (If I’m correct) in 30-30. No issues other than the 30-30 had the classic tang crack. I had a friend trace the stock and make me a new one which I stained and finished as closely as I could. Find one and enjoy it!

When the 99 was produced in 300 Savage, I think it was just after WW2 a well healed American hunter hired a northern guide for a polar bear hunt. Not sure if it was Barrow or Baffin Island.
He got close enuf to a bear whom charged him after his first shot. He kept his cool emptying his rifle into the angry bear.
It fell dead and his rifle was empty.

Yea I picked up a 99 in 300 Savage produced before they were tapped for mounting a scope. I'd like to add a period specific Tang sight for it but they don't seem to come up too often anywhere...? And Williams doesn't manufacture a proper peep / tang sight for the G model.

It would have been an great educational video if the whole disassembly, cleaning and reassembly was done in a video.

I'll snap a few more pics when I put it back together...that's the best you're gonna get from me...LOL

Found a few cracks in the stock, dealing with that first.

YouTube has a few good info vids already on the 99. Just gotta look for them.
Found this page helpful. The Savage 99 is in the middle. Again lots of info out there.

It was missing the hammer retractor spring, so I found one that was close.
