If you've been thinking about buying a SXS but have found the prices higher than you'd like, you might be interested in what they have on special at Dante Sports.

On their "Specials" page, they're advertizing the Remington SPR 210 in 12 or 20 gauge for under $500. This is a new gun with warranty.

For those that don't already know, the Remington SPR series are made for Remington by Baikal in Russia. The model that's on sale will, no doubt, be available in limited quantities. It's a single-trigger model (which could be a deal-breaker for some, but a selling point for others).

Not worth it,

If you are in the market for a SxS, take a look at the CZ line. Prophet River has them listed at around 799 new and they are much more refined instruments than the Russian offerings. SxS shooting is all about balance, speed and grace, most of which the Russians are lacking,

Starting out

It's nice to see that someone is producing a lower-priced starter gun. Like any sport one develops a more sophisticated outlook and desires better equipment over time.

I actually have to agree, the CZ's are the 'cheapest' double I'd consider, not snobbery, just that doubles don't come cheap. When they do, something's gotta give.

It's always cheaper to start out where you're going to end up. Buying the cheapest version of anything is never the most cost effective way,

There's a huge gap in the market for a reasonably-priced, durable side-by-side. Say $1600 with great durability, handling and no frills like fake case hardening. Chrome the receiver, scroll-engrave it at best.

This. I handled a Baikal a while back when getting into SxSes. Undoubtedly solid and reliable, but nowhere near as nice as the CZs.

You lose a lot of what a side by is all about going with a Baikal or the like, even to a degree a CZ. Balance and light weight are critical in side by's, it's all about the handling, and buying a cheap, overbuilt side by is gauranteed to leave a poorer impression than a fine example will of the breed.

Don't pass judgement too fast on the CZ before writing them off. They tend to be sweet handling guns. Wouldn't want to spend a season shooting skeet with it but the relatively few shots taken on grouse they should last a long time.

No argument from me. I agree that the CZ models are an order of magnitude better than these Remingtons (Baikals). But then, too many makers to list are another order of magnitude better than the CZ's. The prices reflect this.

You can't always say you get what you pay for, because it's possible to overpay. It might be more accurate to say you don't get what you don't pay for.

I'm not suggesting that these are going to fully provide the real SXS experience. But, I am certain that steel compatibility, choke tubes, and a warranty are important to some. I'm equally certain that these are a good entry product because:

  • Baikals are well made overall. If they have a drawback, it's fit and finish, weight distribution and total weight
  • These guns are aggressively priced (I doubt that there are many available at this price). It won't be hard to get all or most of one's cash out of these if/when the time comes to sell. You won't have that flexibility with any other make/model.
  • With the choice of 12 or 20 ga., a buyer can chose between a lighter gun or a more versatile gun for the same money

The only concern I'd have about these as an excellent starter SXS is the single trigger. Not my favorite for a game gun, but some shooters don't want to confuse themselves by using both single and double triggers in different situations. For them, this is a sweet deal.

The 20 is scaled framed?

The CZs? Yup; the 20 is noticeably lighter and slimmer than the 12:
