Thoughts on 2.75" shotgun patterns

All,

Recently I bought a 2.75" only shotgun. I took it to the patterning board with my favourite loads and with the tested ammo, Remington express long range 5s and 6s, I noticed my pattern is about 10% more dense with an ic and lm choke than the pattern thrown from my 3" shotgun. This shotgun uses the same chokes (invector plus) as my other shotguns and for the most part I only use light mod and imp cyl even when I shoot trap (hunting practice for me).
So, I decided to pattern my trap loads and yup, maybe a little less improvement but still more dense than in my 3" gun. Anyone else have this experience? I guess it may make sense considering the pellets are going directly into a forcing cone.

Too much missing information here. What model of shotgun is, are the chokes factory or aftermarket, & distance are you pattern testing at? What is marked on a choke tube means very little compared to what pattern it actually throws. I have a set of remchoke tubes where the I/C tube throws a tighter pattern than the modified.

Hmm maybe I wasn't clear. The question isn't about chokes. The question is why I get a better pattern with a browning 2.75" only gun then the same shotgun with a 3" chamber. All other variables are the same, same model, same barrel length, same chokes (extended.trulock). Distance tested is 35 yards and 20 yards. The only thing I can thing of is the there isn't a .25" step in the 2.75" chambered shotgun between the bore and.forcing cone.

I have nothing to offer, however your .25" jump is at least sound reasoning.

Very interesting question ..

So choke down 1 size on the 3" gun.

This is why they say pattern your gun to know how it shoots. Every gun is different even if they come off the line side by side.

Pertaining to the original post, I remember reading a similar reasoning from Randy Wakeman. He theorized that this is why people tend to get such great patterns from 16-gauges. I think the theory is sound, too.

Wow, I didn't realize until I read these links how contentious the issue is. One writer describes the difference as a lack of patchiness, that is kind of what I am seeing. I May not suggesting we all ditch our 3" guns or anything, just found it interesting.

In theory, it should be the opposite, especially on the newer guns, tapered forcing cones. Most older 2 3/4" guns had a pretty steep step from chamber to bore, which in theory at least, is supposed to deform more shot. Most of my newer guns are 3.5" chambered, they all have long forcing cones in them, so in theory, should throw tighter patterns. Each shotgun is a rule onto itself however, I have two nearly identical Remington 870s, both pattern a little different with the same choke. Then you need to realize that SAAMI allows +/- 75 fps variation from advertised speed on shotgun ammo as an acceptable variance and that 2 shells from the same box can vary in both speed and shot count. It adds a little variation to things.
