Thoughts on 223 WSSM?

It's the ballistic twin of the .220 Swift, so it should be murder on coyotes. I use a .220 loaded with 40 grain v-max, and these bullets are stupidly accurate at .223 WSSM velocities. Like the Swift you'll see basically no drop out to 300m.

There's a very pretty new featherweight classic in .223 WSSM, in your area--PM me if you're interested;-)

Actually according to the load manuals, the WSSM can be loaded with a lot more jam than the Swift. 4600fps of hot screaming coyote death.

Still, I think this is one of the sillier cartridges currently out there. The case (IMHO) makes much better basis for a 6.5 or even 7mm

I personally don't think that the WSSM line of cartridges will be around for very long. A 223 WSSM would be ok if you handload, but factory ammo availability might be an issue a few years down the road.

4600 fps!?!?! - Jeebus murphey prosper... at that speed the bullets probably hit 'em before the gun goes off!

Very impressive indeed (velocity wise). I had considered this caliber before finally deciding on the 22-250. My only reasoning to stay away from it was that I figured it would go though barrels much quicker than I cared for. Other than that, wheeeph...laser gun is right.

The .223wssm has already gained a bad reputation because of a string of horrible mod 70's. Some of the first ones werent chrome bored and.

True or not the .223wssm has caught a bad case of "Swift-itis". Its already got a reputation for being innacurate, barrel burining and having feed problems.

Winchester has no one but themselves to blame for these misconceptions floating around. Model 70 coyotes shooting 6" groups out of the box has all but ended this cool little round

The WSSM's are not going anywhere soon... the .223WSSM is one of the flattest, fastest and most accurate long range varmint cartidges.
What about the 243 WSSM??? When I compared the 223 wssm 55 grain ballistic silvertip to the 243 wssm 55 grain ballistic silvertip, the 243 was 210 feet per second faster out of the barrel and 3.3" flatter at 500 yards (at 500 yards the 223 -28.8" and the 243 -25.5" when zeroed at 200 yards).

Yup, I made my wildcat, the 7mm AIM, on the WSSM case, it looks quite appropriate as a 7mm and the performance is amazing, pictured with Berger 180gr VLD's:

It will launch the 58gr VMAX at 4100fps. If you want to see laser beam to 300 yards, and pink mist....
Why would Winchester make a 55 grain ballistic tip if that is what happens???
