Conversations With a Mole Inside IPSC

by Ben Stoeger » Fri Jul 27, 2012 9:11 pm

I recently got a chance to speak with a man that claims to have all sorts of knowledge about the inner workings of the IPSC Executives. He struck me as credible and the story he told me was absolutely amazing. On the condition of his anonymity, he has agreed to let me post it here.

For the record, I am not asserting any of this is necessarily true, it is just one man’s version of events. Hopefully by me posting this other people with information will come forward and we will find out for certain what the truth is.

From the Mole:

IPSC doesn’t have much money. Contrary to what you might think, Nick and Vince aren’t using IPSC as a piggy bank. The organization actually doesn’t make much money.

The reason that IPSC can run on such terrible revenue is because other people chip in, out of pocket, off the books, to pay a lot of Nick's expenses. He gets off-the-books trips all over the world and gets to act like a big shot; they effectively buy power in the IPSC organization. If you look at the list of people on Nick's "Executive Council"... they're the ones... in exchange for money, they've bought power in the org. Fritz Gephart was a big contributor for years, until he and Nick had a falling out, at which point he closed the checkbook and was replaced on the Executive Council shortly thereafter. Alain Joly is still in there with an open checkbook. I suspect (but don't know for sure) that Dino is on the same program.

Over the years, Vince has been the biggest and most steadfast of Nick's sponsors. In return, Vince gets unrestrained power. Essentially if he says a rule should be changed, it gets changed, no matter who doesn't like it. In addition, Nick leans on Vince to be his "enforcer" - Nick is the consummate politician (that's not a compliment) and so whenever there is an issue flaring up that needs to be spanked down, Vince is the guy to do it. You have seen some of Vince’s vicious tactics on display in Doodie Project. Vince is famous for that stuff.

Effectively they've build themselves a little organization within IPSC in a clever way which ensures their power can't be challenged. They *all* share the vision of making IPSC an "Olympic sport", despite the fact that IOC and ISSF have steadfastly refused to even accept an application. They have even said that they would change the sport in whatever way they need to make IPSC an Olympic sport. Nick would ban gunpowder if that is what it took.

You can see, in that context, how a lot of stuff makes sense - globalization, the pussification of the targets and removal of anything smelling like a "combat" or "real world" scenario, the pursuit of all the tiny little third-world countries, the adoption of airsoft, etc.... all fed by one man's megalomaniacal obsession, and supported by the guys who will support it, off the books, in exchange for power.

The Mole on the World Shoot (I asked him where the money goes):

In Greece, the rumors were rampant that the local officials put a lot of it in their own pockets, and f**ked the businesses they had relationships with. In general a world shoot is *rife* with opportunities for this type of corruption.
Nick also seems to really love flashy opening ceremonies full of pomp and bulls**t. There are also the expenses of compensating the whole Executive Council (they generally are put up in the best hotels and have their expensive tastes fully covered) for the better part of a month, I'd be surprised if there was much left when the match was done. Lots of fingers are into the money.

Interesting read. I have had my black badge for a while but didn't get into regular IPSC matches until very recently as I now shoot much less IDPA and more IPSC.

Regardless if this stuff is true or not I love the way IPSC is run in other ways. I love that they don't take any crap and if you are an idiot or a "know it all" you are going home. I love the online match sign up and scoring and I love the quality of the matches.

I'm sure the individual provincial sections here are run great, as I know that IPSC Canada is too.

The problem exists at the highest level, and unfortunately dictates stupid rule changes that affect everyone. And manages events such as the World Shoot that also therefore affect Canadians.

There needs to be a revolution. Or Canada needs to join USPSA.

ipsc ontario was only just recently cleaned up, with the departure of Bud, but Dino is still here and if what was in that message hods true than we need to remove him too.

Please just don't throw out the baby with the bathwater or cut our collective noses off to spite our face. IPSC has so much to offer as a sport.

Granted it lost any real life situation validity many years ago. But this simply moved it away from "defensive shooting" to more of a sport.

And as a sport it's full of glitz, glamour and great fun to both compete in and for spectators.

Olympic acceptance? PHHHHHTH! Let's go for TV sports coverage! ! ! ! ! NASCAR showed us that this is where all the money is!

Unfortunately this is how many of the worlds sporting organizations are run When I race Motorcycles we had to deal with the FIM and CMA and they both make IPSC look like the bush leagues.

USPSA is difference because they are US based non profit and must run by the rules managed by the US internal revenue service. (remember the only people who could lock up Al Capone) IPSC could use that kind of oversight on its books but each section are run separately according to their own rules so there would still be ample opportunity to move the money/ power around.

you think olympics not full of politics anything with rules will have.as far as the rest
you can always follow the money to fine corruption.

I think it's hilarious that people think USPSA is/would be any different.

I guess the difference is that the USPSA's hidden agen isn't to change the sport into something less so the members are not as pissed off. Buying of the steel challenge ruffeled a few feathers but its something that a good chuck of the memberships shoots, if you see USPSA get rid of the proper target and adopt a toy division the membership wont be so quiet

I would rather see us do our own thing, instead of being an Area of the US. We'd lose voting rights at the General Assembly and all that. I know for the vast majority of Canadian IPSC shooters that's not important, but I like being able to go shoot in a variety of countries. I think in fact each country should be allowed to make the rules more acceptable for their countries (like if they need to PC the targets down to squished stop signs to keep the sport alive) vs all of us having to do it so that one country can keep it. Keep the general spirit of the game alive, but let it be fluid when it needs to be.
