ive been wanting a 40sw for a while, i always end up with 9mm pistols when i set out to buy a 40.
now im planing on a M&P40 but looks like there are soo many different levels of the M&P40 (standard, pro, thumb safety, vtac...etc)

is there really a point i dropping the extra $ on the "higher end" ones, or are they just dressed up finishes (plus the thumb safety option...which i dont want)?

i know there was a small number of them that had the trigger recalled because some got stuck from a pin breaking... glock recalled their gen 4 recoil spring about 5x.. so ya...design flaws happen, and workers make mistakes.. problem was fixed i believe.

edit- ok..i pulled the trigger on it already lol...

but ya, how is it?

I have a M&P 40 with apex AEK trigger, hard set sear, ultimate striker block and competition springs. The trigger was good in stock form but is so much nicer with the apex parts. As for the gun itself, I really do enjoy it. The .40 is a fairly snappy cartridge compared to a 9mm or .45 but it's not unpleasant by any means. Plus with the .40 you do have the option of dropping in a 9mm barrel. Make sure you play with the back straps to find the right size, but remover the most comfortable one isn't always the best one. I used to use the smallest insert but found I was using to much finger on the trigger and accuracy suffered. Switched to the medium and noticed a difference. Other than that, enjoy the gun.

ive shot 40's before, just always ended up with the 9mm version of wat i was looking at by fluke...the one pistol i wish i could have tracked down in a 40 it the walther ppq navy... but i dont think it exists outside of a 9mm....maybe one day.i almost grabbed the Navy 9mm a couple months back but i held off...maybe ill grab one over the winter...it just felt lke the best pistol ive ever held.

ive got a glock gen 4, and i use the large backstrap.. i dont have big hands but its what works best for me. even on my other pistols i have the hogue overmolded grips.
i was about to buy the CORE but irunguns has the m&p40 on sale for $500 with only 5%tax.. couldnt turn it down. also, i may use it for ipsc next summer so the optic would put me in open class, and i think im going to get a real race gun if i go full open class.
if i dont use it for production ipsc...
got a link for all that APEX trigger stuff you mentioned? also, irunguns has the conversion barrel by storm lake for $130.. is that a good price? ive never dealt wit them before but their prices seem great.
any idea if the .40 mags will hold the 9mm ammo? heard the glock 22's can hold 9mm no problem.

i also wanted the 40 right now because 9mm seems to be tough to come by.. this will give me another caliber option.
cant wait to get this ting out on the range, ive only held one once and it was a few years ago.. ive been eying this pistol a while.

I carry an M&P40 for work, and I have one at home. Love it!

I was never impressed with Glocks and had written off the polymer pistols as uninteresting. but when my company went from .38Sp revolvers to the M&P, I figured I'd get one for practice...and became a convert. Seriously great ergonomics...far better than the Glock IMO...easy to shoot and very reliable. Basically I regard the M&P as 'Glock done right'...:p. Some people give the M&P line a bad rap because it had some early problems, but in my view, those problems were quickly identified and fixed....growing pains, essentially. As well as my .40, I've got a .45ACP which I like a lot better than a 1911, and the .22LR which I also find very good. I won't insist that M&Ps are the best for everybody, but for myself, they are a perfect fit.

As far as the APEX parts go, they get rave reviews from just about everybody...I put a Duty/Carry kit in my .45 and it does seem nice. I keep my .40 absolutely stock [like my work gun] and the trigger has smoothed out quite a bit just from being shot. It's a 'nice to have', not a 'need to have'...unless your trigger is really rough [again this seems to be an early production problem; I hear recent production is considerably better]. As far as the various models within the caliber go...all I can say is that you should analyze your needs carefully before you decide. I have been toying with the idea of the 5" Pro model in .40, but I don't really need it.

Have fun with your new friend!

I have a M&P 9 and a 40. The 40 has the APex trigger and is as close to a "perfect" pistol as I could imagine. I can compare it to the many other pistols I own and it is the best combination of accuracy, reliability, comfort and ease of use.

I shoot 155 gr lead SWC bullets over 3.5gr TiteGroup. Very mild recoil and very accurate.

if the 5" barrel version has a better trigger, it might be even better. Never tried one.

A lot of the apex stuff you can get from brownells. Can also get it here from a sponsor http://ctcsupplies.ca/collections/pistol-parts/m-p

thanks for that info. those Apex triggers really remind me of a glock trigger lol.
ill probably swap it out once i decide what i want out of the trigger group and do a little more reading into it.

anyone bought from IRUNGUNS from their canadian store for instock items?
i sent payment but and got a order confirmation but nothing about giving them my RPAL or club name yet.. i emailed them back but i understand its a weekend and they are busy so... ya.
Jay sent me one email before i bought it saying that its there and would be sent out as soon as the transfer goes through. ill probably call them tomorrow.

just got it in the mail today, gotta say this pistol seems amazing.
dont get me wrong, i love my glock but the M&P seems to be a better built gun (table top inspection wise.) its not as smooth but my glock is 2 yrs old and this m&p only has the 2 test fire rounds s&w used on it so i suspect the trigger will smothen out a little.
im going to clean it all up today and go shoot it tomorrow.

Glad you like it. I've never owned a glock, but have shot them before, I always found the ergonomics off to me. The M&P however seems to have excellent ergonomics. As for the trigger, it will smooth out over time.

ide really love to get my hands on a m&p9 to compare the 2.. looking at the profile of the barrels (glock 9mm vs m&p40) it really looks like they probably start witht he same blank barrel then the iside bore is bored out to te caliber.. the outside bore/diameter would be the same on the 9mm and .40. i know there are conversion barrels, but i want to take my own measurements.
if i can swap justhe barrels between the m&p9 and 40 ill probably grab a C.O.R.E in 9mm.. but if not then i may grab a long slide core in .40 if i can get a 9mm conversion barrel for the 5" slide (im thinnking of this being an open class pistol for ipsc.)

i just picked up my glock, and theres just something about it, i cant sell it.... i dont know why....but i think i will to grab a different glock
