Thoughts on the Dominion Arms Grizzly Mag Fed Shotgun

The first shipment of Grizleys wasn't perfect.
Mine had barrel concentricity problems. So did it's replacement.
I had to work the action a few hundred times before it got smooth.

My latest is a magfed.
I found the metal had improved 100 fold.
The action was silky smooth right out of the box.
The barrel is perfect. It is, overall a much improved gun.

I bought an 8" Dlask 870, and found there were subtle differences, but no where did I find it any better than my magfed.
Sold it as redundant.

God that thing is hideous. Do you think you could slap more do dads on it. I think that one alone would push the weight limit of any Helicopter.

Well, the good news is he wouldn't have to worry about falling out of a helicopter, something would catch if one were to slip while carrying that thing.

I want to tread lightly here, as a goodly few people I respect have commented here in a modestly positive way about the mag fed grizzly. However one thing I've noticed about these guns, is they don't show up in the field. Ever. They are frequently touted as being a fine 'wilderness defence shotgun' by guys living in the Fraser Valley BC (formerly guilty of this), Toronto, Winnipeg... I haven't seen one up here. Closest I've seen is a Dominion Arms Outlaw (also Chinese).

Lets say I know a goodly few helicopter pilots, and a goodly few people who spend as much time in the real bush as they do at home. None of them are carrying red dot sighted, mag fed, muzzle device wearing, Knoxx stock fitted 8" Chinese superguns. One fellow, who's on this forum and flies whirly birds as well, has a take down Marlin 1895. Excellent choice, slim, clean lines that won't hang up, and reliable/tough. Another whirly pilot, also on here, a 12" Dlask barrelled 870, also a good choice. Again, smooth lines, won't hang up, reliable. If you showed up with a mag fed Knoxx stocked chinese gun... well there'd be a good few giggles. And, I feel, for good reason. Sensible choices are rarely exciting. Silly ones are often exciting, but still silly.

OK, don't want to get too much off-topic... but why are people bothered about the production location of a firearm, but they are not bothered by the production location of other goods?

Personally, I'd much rather hunt small games with a 20g SxS...

but if someone wants to do it with a mag fed shotgun... why not.

...and here I am getting sucked in. This gun, no matter the barrel length, would be an abysmal choice for hopping in and out of vehicles (especially helicopters, something I have a peculiar insight into). That godawful mag box hanging down 5" is more of a hinderance than 4" of barrel ever could be. A smooth, short barrelled pump with a full length mag is much more user friendly, guaranteed to be much more reliable, and you can get one without buying Chinese garbage.

As for buying Chinese "because everything is" as a another poster said, the fact is, everything isn't. I go to great lengths to buy Canadian produce, German kitchen knives and shoes, and Italian leather hiking boots. My truck is a Dodge Cummins (though I have two Toyota 4x4's in the barn, I will choose Japanese if I have to over Chinese), my furniture I make myself with Canadian wood, my watch is German. My guns are all American, Canadian, Czech, and German made... My cellphone and this computer, are designed in the USA and assembled in China, unfortunately. The sad truth is the other options no longer exist, because nobody would support them and buy them, because Chinese was cheaper. Cheaper, yes, but at a hell of a cost... It's just like voting, "one Chinese gun purchase won't make a difference..." Hell yes it does, and will.

We are literally selling Canada bit by bit everytime we buy a Chinese product. I hope people wake up but by the flocks running to Walmart, doesn't look like it. Sorry to derail the thread, but it didn't really belong here to begin with.

Finally, why isn't this thread in the "tacticool" shotgun forum?

Try loading and unloading your gun when you are hoping in and out of the truck every kilometre or so. Currently I carry a 20" 590 or 14.5 Dominion arms shottie and used to carry a 500. the 500 was a great gun to carry a long distance, but you find that shooting 3" mag slugs was painful. The Knoxx stock works better with the 870 style controls as opposed to the mossberg. As for the mag sticking out, sorry but the mag will not be in the gun when in the vehicle or chopper. It's horses for courses, when I get my 8" mag fed, I won't give up my other 2, I will just have a wider selection to pick from to tailor to the work I have.

Because Shotguns are a passion they are part of our Heritage the keyboard I peck on is not.

Anytime I can, I try to by North American or European sometimes it's not possible. But with Shotguns it is.

If this is the sort of Firearm you like have at it. Just post it in the proper forum.

I haven't shot mine a lot, but no significant problems to report. The magazine is a mixed blessing, adding weight and makes the gun slightly more awkward to use.

For me, that would be a pretty moot point. I'm not going to carry it far, nor shoot long range with it.

However, having the ability to reload 5 rounds all at once, especially in a shorter barreled shotgun is very appealing.

That's what I like about it. It can sit empty until I need it, then I can load 5 rounds and be ready, then unload and sit it back until needed again.

I wouldn't take a mag fed shotgun afield for bear defense or any other reason. There is no point, as you can just load up your tubular magazine and hit the trail, without the extra weight of a magazine or the awkwardness of it. And yeah, the one pictured just looks like something that is going to catch on your pack, on branches, your seat belt, etc etc..

After trying a few different "bear" shotguns I decided that the most effective one isn't going to be the one with 9 rounds, a heat shield, fine wood stock, custom engraving, red dot sights etc. The most important thing is that it be light and compact enough to easily carry and keep on hand. (That and that it goes bang and you can shoot it properly)

I settled on the short one below:

It's a CHinese gun because trying to get a 14" barrel Remington 870 is almost impossible. It functions just as good as any 870 or Mossberg 500 I've shot. Westiclle gave me a "youth" buttstock and I put it on it, and I hand filed a rifle sight for it, and discarded the bead sight.

What makes this nicer than most shotguns is that it's compact and streamlined. Although I am just as likely to take my Mdl 94 Trapper 45 COlt for "defense" and if I am going to grizz country, the 375 RUger gets the nod.

The mag fed would serve a purpose for me, but it wouldn't be going in the bush.

If you are hiking a long way through the bush, nothing comes close to the Mossberg 500, but it will hurt when you shoot it on the range.

I picked up a Norinco HP9 18.5" (870 clone) as a cheap fun/beater gun. Not as smooth, versatile (no chokes) or as well finished as my dad's wood stocked Mossberg 500, but I don't see any real problem with it for $250.

I suspect the Grizzly will get some glowing reviews if this is moved/reposted to the Black/Green Shotguns forum...it's all a matter of perspective, after all
