Thousands of Tuktu(caribou) ... PICS ADDED.

Sorry didn't make it outland tonite as something came up. Hopefully tomorrow nite or on the weekend as I understand another wave of thousands are on the way.

p.s. Looky I'm always interested in seeing what my fellow CGNer's would use to shoot/kill certain wildlife ... and honestly I'm torn between my .308 and my 223 for my next tuktu hunt ... hell maybe I'll take my old beat up 303 brit and shoot some irons ;)
 
Question...what range do you need to shoot these from? Can you get within 100 yards? Or is it more like 400 yards?

I have shot tuktu up to 300 yards away ... but most shots are 50-100 ... and well during LARGE herds you can get right in the middle of them and almost touch them sometimes. I may go tonite or I may head out this weekend ... things got busy out of nowhere so we shall see.

I've only ever shot tuktu with a 30-06. I saw a fresh set of antlers in a guy's front yard a couple of days ago so they must be around.

I'm enjoying this being Nunavumiut. Can't wait fo rthe residency period to be up!
 
I have not shot Caribou in sufficient numbers to be an expert by any means, but my opinion so far is, they are not hard to kill.
They are also not really a "big" animal compared to an Elk or a Moose.
Biggest rifle I have used was my 308 Norma mag/200 bonded bullet [really not needed, but what I had at the time.]
Smallest rifle was a 6mm Remington/100 Partition, which seemed adequate for the job.
I'm thinking a 6.5x55 or a 260 Remington with any decent bullet from 120 grains up would be pretty well ideal.

Otokiak, take all your rifles in a trailer on your quad and shoot one caribou with each including your 50 BMG, then dissect each one and give us a report on the BEST Tuktu gun.
I've taken tuktu with many calibers from 6mm-284 to 300 RUM and almost everything in between. I prefer a super high speed caliber as I have encountered almost gale force winds too many times up on the tundra and slower cartridges just handicap a guy too much.

Try your Swiss Arms Bluestar with 60gr Nosler Partitions or 62gr Barnes Triple Shock. Or break out your shorty M-14. Just about any decent quality hunting bullet from 150-165-180gr will work on 'Bou. To be completely honest though, I've shot more with a basic .303 British than all other cals combined. While I love the 6.5X55mm, I didn't have great experiences hunting with it using factory S&B ammo. Very poor expansion and over penetration, with multiple bullets punching through mature bulls, forcing extra shots to put it down fast. With handloads or different factory bullet I'm sure that wouldn't have happened.
