Thousands of Tuktu(caribou) ... PICS ADDED.

Very sorry but life has gotten busy and I've been travelling off and on and just didn't get a chance to go out. I did go for a tour on Sunday on my quad and only saw a mother and a calf ... there is another herd coming our way apparently. Sorry again but I haven't had the time I thought I would to get outland more. :(

Once again a huge herd of tuktu(caribou) is passing by my home town ... I watched as hundreds of quads and trucks went up our road to the Meladine River to shoot and get some tuktu. I'll listen to my elders and wait for the first wave to pass by and then go shoot some ... plus I heard from a good friend who went up last nite that it was the 'Ol K Coral out there ... BANG BANG BANG 360 degree's he said ... D'Oh! My damn deep freezer crapped out on me this spring ... hmmm ... time to buy a freezer me thinks? HAHA. Pics to follow soon.

p.s. what choice of calibre would you use on a tuktu??? I wanna hear your choices only? ;)

I was going to ask you, I have never even seen one in the flesh. Your m305 should knock them off pretty easy.

Well a good friend of mine sent me 5 pics she took from last week when the herd passed by the community out on the Meladine River. Here's a few taken by Lesli Rynyk.

Nice pics.

Good to see the herd is strong.

I'm always concerned with people using cartridges that penetrate too much, and/or not being careful, and injuring animals when hunting herds.

A few years back our family was given a whole caribou that had been accidentally killed after a hunter shot his intended animal (30-06 with 180 grain partitions) and the bullet exited the first animal's boiler and killed another a few meters on the other side. At the time it was legal to shoot two per hunter, but the fellow only wanted one.

YOu have to get a tag or Narwhal and i didn't bother applying as I'm travelling all summer to the outlying communities doing training and inspecting the airports and well I sold my boat the othe summer ... plus everyone applies and only a handful get tags in a lottery draw. I have not gone out with friends for beluga yet as they haven't been coming this way yet ... I may go with my buddy Kyle as he owns a boat and I'm sure he'll want to go get a beluga or two.

Good point and not uncommon. Ive heard of the same thing happening with a 270 win. 150gr. Hornady IL combo. As with any other shooting you need to need to know/figure where the bullet will end up. A Caribou is hardly a reliable backstop !

Great pictures by the way.

I would use .303British because that's what my Enfields use, and nothing is enough better to make me want to change.

Why do the elders say wait for the first wave to pass? Just because of the crowd of eager hunters?

If I never hunt outside of Saskatchewan there is enough variety of game here that I shall be content, but if I ever hunt outside of Saskatchewan, caribou is one of two animals that are most likely to entice me. (The other is bison.)

I used to enjoy watching the komaticks(sp?) come in with 15 to 20 animals on each one in Iqaluit. I'd go help skin. Clyde didn't have much Caribou once I moved there. But some of the guys got them as the government would fly them to where they were by helicopter, to one of the old radar stations in the center of Baffin. One of the few things I miss.
