Hey guys, I'm working on a ruger 10/22 archangel 556 kit build right now and hit a bit of a road block when it comes to barrels. It seems to me that most after market barrels are up in the $200+++ range and I'm sure that they are worth every penny! But for me I'm mostly just after that "bull barrel" look since this is a budget/fun gun build for me. So I stumbled upon the net barrel shroud kits that look pretty sharp and very reasonably price but of coarse they are only in the states and wont ship them up here! ARG
So it got me to thinking about making my own...and not some PVC jobbie held on with pipe insulation and electrical tape! I was thinking about machining an end piece out of aluminum and using aluminum pipe to give me the look I am after. I was planning on having a threaded muzzle (1/2 28TPI) so I have the flexibility of adding other adapters, flash hiders, and the sort later down the road if I choose. Now never threading a barrel myself...what am I in for? I do have a lathe, die handles, and was thinking about buying a guide (or making one) so I know I'm starting off straight.
It looks like I'm shooting for an OD of 0.4989 to 0.4924 (does any one know what the OD of a factory barrel is at the muzzle?) and how far down to thread? Also, does it matter if the barrel is stainless? Of coarse I will be doing a lot of trial runs on some metal stock before attempting the final on the barrel itself. Just looking for a little guidance. Thanks!
