Hey guys, I'm working on a ruger 10/22 archangel 556 kit build right now and hit a bit of a road block when it comes to barrels. It seems to me that most after market barrels are up in the $200+++ range and I'm sure that they are worth every penny! But for me I'm mostly just after that "bull barrel" look since this is a budget/fun gun build for me. So I stumbled upon the net barrel shroud kits that look pretty sharp and very reasonably price but of coarse they are only in the states and wont ship them up here! ARG

So it got me to thinking about making my own...and not some PVC jobbie held on with pipe insulation and electrical tape! I was thinking about machining an end piece out of aluminum and using aluminum pipe to give me the look I am after. I was planning on having a threaded muzzle (1/2 28TPI) so I have the flexibility of adding other adapters, flash hiders, and the sort later down the road if I choose. Now never threading a barrel myself...what am I in for? I do have a lathe, die handles, and was thinking about buying a guide (or making one) so I know I'm starting off straight.

It looks like I'm shooting for an OD of 0.4989 to 0.4924 (does any one know what the OD of a factory barrel is at the muzzle?) and how far down to thread? Also, does it matter if the barrel is stainless? Of coarse I will be doing a lot of trial runs on some metal stock before attempting the final on the barrel itself. Just looking for a little guidance. Thanks!

If you have a lathe, thread the muzzle on the lathe, rather than using a die. The factory barrel has the integral front sight base with dovetail - that is going to have to be turned off as well.

The sporter barrels have all the meat for a 1/2x28 thread, even the minor dia. in front of the sight base. Length is usually 1/2" from muzzle to shoulder. This leaves a good shoulder to tighten against with the 10/22 barrel. The length is not critical, 1/2" will accommodate any AR muzzle device. Another member had his buddy do a 16" compact barrel for his own archangel project. Try searching the rimfire forum for his posts and pm him to see if he can help. The protrusion of the sight base can be ground by hand then it can be turned and threaded on the lathe.

I have a machinist buddy who threaded the end of a Ruger OEM 10/22 barrel for me a couple years back.
He did it on a lathe in approx. 1/2 hr. and actually made it look pretty easy (in my eyes....)
It's threaded 1/2-28 X .400"

thanks for all the help guys! I did know that I can cut threads with a lathe, however i have never done it myself although i do know how to do it in theory (guess i will be practicing a lot with that metal stock!!) hahaa. now i think i already know the answer but i have to ask anyway... i guess i can't shorten the barrel myself can i? thanks for the pic Wham-O!!

Of course you can shorten the barrel yourself, as long as it is more than 18" long when you are finished. Go below that, and the rifle becomes a prohibited firearm.
