Hey everyone,

I have really been eyeballing a Remington 870 Police (20" bead sight IC bbl) with the walnut stock for a while now. I'll probably use it for a bit of everything and nothing in particular. Im looking to make it more useable for different activities through the ability to swap out chokes. I am looking for a jack of all trades and master of none sort of thing.

I would take it hunting for small game (although I prefer my .22 over a shotgun for that) and shoot some clays with it and take to the range for fun. I'd attempt to take it duck hunting as well but I prefer going for grouse and hare. I never felt the need for a 28" vent rib for shooting grouse and hare 20-30 yards away.

Just a note: If I were to get more into skeet shooting and duck hunting I would happily get a dedicated shotgun for those activities.

So my question is:

Would threading this shotgun for chokes make a reasonable do-all shotgun? Again it doesn't need to be the best at anything (and it won't be), but I'd like to be able to take it for any activity because "it'll work". I realize there are cheaper and better ways to accomplish this, but the 870P in particular really apparels to me. I'd love to hear some constructive opinions on this, thanks everyone.

Dan

For what you want, that would be perfect. Really with interchangeable chokes, the only benefit for longer barrels is a bit more velocity and increased
sight radius. Never been a fan of long barrels

the 870 has probably downed more ducks and killed more game than any other brand because it has sold in the millions. if you feel the need of a longer barrel or a specialty barrel you can swap one in less than a minute. one of the most versatile shotguns you can own because of the endless variety of parts. hard to go wrong in my opinion with your gun choice.

I had a mossberg 590 mariner threaded for chokes. For my intended purposes, it works just fine. Tacord did the work, I have no complaints.

Thank you all for the responses everyone. Seems like I will go ahead and buy the 870P and hand it over to the local gunsmith for some threading, I think it'll make a great all-rounder. And although I may not swap chokes out too often, I like the idea of being able to should the need arise.

Sspike-I had considered threading a 590 mariner as well, glad to hear it worked out well for you. I've thought about sending mine to Tacord, but I think I like the idea of dropping it off locally. I have seen their other work in person, really nice stuff.

Local was not a real option for me. But Casey was real good with the turnaround time on it. And did a great job. He got it in on a monday and by Wednesday, i had a tracking number and it was on the way.

I'm not a fan of long barrels either.. rarely find it necessary.

You can get a lot done with a 20" barrel so it's worth it to have it threaded with Rem-Chokes imo and Casey/Tac-Ord is my top pic.

IMO for the longer "swingable" barrels you don't really loose anything at 24". Thats the magic number for a longer ribbed barrel to me. But again, that's only for a specific task or two.
For all around duty... 18.5" or 20" threaded covers you. Personally I prefer the 18.5". I really notice that extra 1.5" for bush carry or maneuverability.

I tried out my police 14" and couldn't believe how tight the patterns stayed at aprox 15-20 yards with bird shot. Threading it for chokes sounds like a neat idea
