Tick and Lyme Disease Awareness

What permethrin based product do you use to spray your clothing with?

Unless things have changed we can't get any of the good stuff produced to treat clothing up here (Sawyer). Legal to use I guess but not legal to buy. Which is pretty dumb as one could just buy a few cans of Raid or Orkin that only contains permethrin and douse their clothes with that. Or if one is a farmer mix up a light batch of Pounce maybe lol

You can also buy it in pure form from a Pharmacy. Its not something they generally stock so you'll have to call around to see who will order it for you. Took me a few tries, but I found one that would order it for us last year. Its a 100gram bottle. Then you can just mix it up to your tastes - 100g will make up 20L of 0.5% spray. All in it cost me about $128 (which is ~$6.50 a liter), and has a 3-year shelf life once opened. Me and 3 others used less than 1/3 of the bottle last year, each coating 2+ outfits, and I will be mixing up more soon because Bear Season is about to begin!

Thats what you're after it. Its a schedule 2 chemical, so its not on the shelf but you dont need a prescription either. The trick is finding a place that will sell it to you, IIRC they have to be a compounding pharmacist to order it for you.

Cool but scary map, Jay. As recently as the 1980s, lyme bearing ticks in Canada were confined to Long Point and Point Pelee in southern Ontario, now they've overrun as seen. And it's even worse in Quebec, probably because there's no water barrier between them and the USA.

Permethrin intended for horses is easily found and it can safely be used on human clothing, just go to any tack shop or equestrian oriented store. The brand I see everywhere and use myself is called Ultra Shield, but there are others.

Also, 'tis the turkey season. Ontario hunters will please take note of my recent post about West Nile Virus in turkeys and ruffed grouse AND watch for possible lyme bearing ticks on those birds.

And it not even people in the country. It's anyplace there are trees, woods, or tall grass. I get ticks in my backyard, even up to the house. And I got 2 trees and a bush, then 80M is the wood line.

Thanks for bringing awareness to this, even the city maintenance workers have tested positive for Lyme disease from tick bites acquired on the job trimming tall grass in urban areas.

Good thread. My GF is a Nurse, & has been "Tested" a few years ago = "Negative". About 6 years back, we lived in Coboconk area {Ontario} first time dealing with a heavy tick area. I found dead ones couple times even in our bed. {spoiled dogs} & often on the dogs. She seems to be dealing with 'Something' that has the earmarks of what you wrote. Allot Of concentration issues & she often feels as she describes as 'Walking through Water', trouble finding words {talking to people} at times, neck pain, motion sickness, fatigue, muscle aches etc etc. G.I issues. Seems to flare up worse at times. Unfortunately, she has an Old, do minium Dr. {small town}. Who always dismiss her, no 'Specialist' referrals. She even talked to the Nurse Practitioner, same, always dismiss her symptoms. It's Gotten ridiculous, & I guess with her being so busy with work in these CV-bs times, we just kinda forgot about looking at options. Silly, how hard they make it for someone going through Something"..to get an answer. Thnx for this thread, time to get this Off the back Burner..& look at getting an Independent tests. What's the procedure on that?

One would hope we eventually see a Lyme vaccine. I know I would pay for it, spending as much time outdoors as I do in Eastern Ontario.

There was a vaccine on the market but they were threatened with so many lawsuits from people claiming weird symptoms that they discontinued it. Read some of the antivaxxers posting here and there to see how that could happen whether there was a problem or not.

Buddy has been off work for 3 and a half years . 3 years bouncing between Doctors and specialist in Thunder Bay , Winnipeg , Toronto and Sarnia . Went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota 6 months ago who in turn sent his samples to Germany and he was diagnosed with Lyme . He's on a full course treatment now with lots of pills , which have been changed twice and it isn't helping . His gut is shot from antibiotics and he runs into road blocks here with Doctors participating in an American course of treatment . Canadian Doctors are useless unless you stand your ground but then you run the risk of being dropped and they have a private list of demanding patients so if your Doctor drops you , you won't get another one . Not only are the Doctors untrained and in over their heads but with socialized medicine and guaranteed pay your outcome isn't that important . It took just over a week to get the diagnosis at the Mayo Clinic where here they couldn't do it in 3 years . Before they sent his samples to Germany to get confirmed they already told him he had lyme . He's 38 years old and his life is ruined by ticks and quacks .

My outdoor clothing is treated with permethion (sp) and i've seen ticks get on me in the tall grass and brush and immediately do a back flip off . That stuff works . I've used it for years . Ticks only climb up , not down and not sideways . When they fill up with blood they drop off . Keep the cuffs of your pants sealed or your socks pulled up over your cuffs and wear a long sleeved shirt tucked in at the waist . Bug dope on your neck and hair and bug dope on your hat .

Alternatively, you've got the issue of for profit clinics - if the clinic you are going to is getting paid by you to get a test, and then getting paid by you to treat the problem, there is a financial incentive to provide false positive results. I'm not specifically saying the Mayo Clinic is one of them (frankly I don't know if they are implicated in these practices or not) but its something to be aware of.

There are for-profit labs in the U.S. that follow non-standardized protocols that do not conform to international best practices. Studies have shown these laboratories do not live up to their claim of finding Lyme disease any more effectively than the testing offered here in BC. In fact, a recent evaluation of these tests showed as high as 57% of healthy Lyme disease-free people, were mislabelled as having Lyme disease.

Of course, both what you suggest and what I am suggesting are violations of the hippocratic oath... But that doesn't stop everyone...

I think it is extremely unlikely that CLIA accredited labs like Igenex in California OR Armin Labs in Germany, would do anything of the sort.

Torrey VS IDSA is in the courts in the USA over their guidelines and the currently accepted test for diagnosing Lyme disease (the antiquated/faulty Elisa C6 test which is worse than a coin flip). Most of the doctors that wrote the IDSA guidelines wrt Lyme Disease, had a conflict of interest. Add to the mix that insurance companies settled out of court prior to the court case, and we can all see where this is going...

Until the court case is resolved & the guidelines/acceptable testing and treatment updated, we will continue to see doctors ignore PHO and HC guidelines to diagnose clinically, point to faulty Elisa C6 serology, and dismiss patients symptoms who will continue to suffer and be harmed.

In the meantime, be tick and lyme disease aware.

Cheers
Jay

If your doctor won't write the requisition for the blood work to send it off to either Armin Labs in Germany or Igenex in California, I would suggest you contact a lyme literate & ILADS trained Naturopath.

The longer lyme disease goes untreated, the harder it is to address...
