Ticks.....

shouldn't pull em like that... the head tends to rip off and stay inside. scratch gently backwards, and they usually release. if avail give em a good rubbing with dish soap, and they'll back out. Or if you're feeling manly, spray em with bug spray, or pour some gas on em. They let go mighty quick

For the less than hardy little girls, baby oil works too.

p.s. do not light the gas........

They like hanging around the hair areas. The ones that I come across every year seem to want to dig in right away. I've used a hot pin to back them out of their hiding once they start to burrow into the skin. They are definitely not something to take too lightly.

I figured a hot pin or unfriendly chemical would work great for them. But all reading I've done regarding removal suggests these little b*stards might throw up germs inside and make you more sick....

Any safe and easy methods for tick removal on humans and furry kids??

go with the dish soap... by rubbing it on them, you seal up their pores and they start to suffocate, they back out on their own rather quickly. the gas/bug spray does the same thing... just not as friendly

They can be REAL bad is south SK in the spring LOL.

I used to come back from dirtbike rides and literally pull a hundred of the little fuggers off me. I've become so desensitized to them that it doesn't even bother me anymore, but the first time my wife (then girlfriend lol) saw it, she nearly passed out, and wouldn't come near me for 3 days lol.

The worst place is any tall grass or bush or right around gopher holes. Gophers are magnets for them, and gopher shooting can lead to doing a lot of tick removal.

Definitely be vigilant about them and try to get them off ASAP, BEFORE they bite and get embedded. As said above, don't just pull them off, use vaseline, baby oil, deet, etc.. to get them to back out, you don't want the jaws left in there. Same goes for your dog/cat, if you leave the jaws in there, they'll end up with permanent bumps where the tick was removed.

Also, Lyme Disease is an ugly thing, it nearly killed my brother-in-law a few years ago. If you're in deer tick country, you have to be extra vigilant.

Waxy

Funny, on the south side of the North Sask River, they are plentiful, on the North side, I haven't had one. A friends rottie outside Saskatoon always has ticks, my rottie has never had any.
God I hate them creepy little buggers.

Yep, you are correct. When you put a hot pin on them or squeeze them, the spew all their bacteria back into your bloodstream.

From the Canlyme website http://www.canlyme.com/

Tick Removal
Perform tick checks regularly over the entire body. They prefer warm moist areas. Embedded ticks should be removed using fine-tipped tweezers. DO NOT use fingers to pull out ticks. DO NOT use petroleum jelly, a hot match, nail polish, or other products. Grasp the tick firmly and as closely to the skin as possible with tip of tweezers. With a steady motion, pull the tick's body away from the skin. The bacteria that cause Lyme disease are contained in the tick's midgut or salivary glands. Cleanse the area with an antiseptic. .

Couple years ago while clearing trails on the property in the interlake. My wife and I stopped counting ticks at 250.Last year wasn't bad for ticks but the mosquitos could have carried you away.

I HATE ticks.

Funny story. The lady friend and I went for a walk through the river valley a few years back. Went to bed that night, no problem. Got up the next morning for class, went to take a shower, and found a tick burrowed in halfway between my belly button and my bits & pieces. Well, I freaked. I tried the salt thing. No workie. Tried the hot match thing. No workie. He had almost 18hrs to dig in so he was good and stuck. Called the girlfriend, she thought it was hilarious, told me to come over. I did, and she kept laughing. We called her mom, who is an ICU nurse, and she thought it was hilarious as well (runs in the family I guess). She said call my family doctor as the ER was swamped.

I called my doctor, explained to the nurse on the phone, who also thought this was just the funniest thing since Chris Rock. Anyways, she says come down right away and the doctor can remove it before his lunch. So I went down, and of course the cute nurse wants to see exactly where the little frigger was nestled in. Well, thankfully she laughed to ease the tension.

Anyways, the doctor yanked it after applying something to the little bastard (I think formaldehyde). F-ing gross.

Someone , said that princess auto sells a horse insecticide that has pyrethrins in it, and supposedly works great . 2 years ago when we had the massive tick outbreak here in manitoba my buddy and i went to the whiteshell to bass fish and portage'd out canoe , going back he walked 10 feet into the bush to tie the fish up at a log by the water , and walked back out and he literally was covered with hundreds of them, I on the other hand had maybe 4 the entire day ..... All i did was use Deep Woods Off or some stupid repellant like that , was older stuff with the DEET being in the 80% plus range I had doused myself head to foot before we went into the bush . But, I'd sure like to find the thread here again that had the name of the stuff princess auto sells, apparently kills ticks on contact for a few washing etc.... goes right into the clothes. The stuff If i remember right is sold in a 1 gallon jug.

One thing I have found that works great when shed hunting in the spring is those cheesy zip off pants that have a cuff over the zipper. They pile up under the cuff and sit there , then when you are done your walk you can fold up the cuff and kill all the little buggers sitting there.

Ticks are bad along the shore of Lake Erie eg. Turkey Point, Rondeau etc, including deer ticks that can carry Lyme disease.

I was camping at Rondeau and 3 days after returning home found one on my shoulder:eek: Swelled up to the size of a kernal of corn. I find them on my Lab too. I use a fine tip tweezers and gently pull. Should also have a small bit of your skin with it.

:agree:
I try not to enter the bush in MB during the summer months, they love me. I'll pick up like 10 and my friends will have none on them, same goes for skeeters. I've been meaning to pick up some permethrin for a while now

I remember a bear that we were skinning out shot in the Ashern area of MB. We had to blast the bear with raid and wrap it in plastic for about an ahour before we even started. The ticks where like grapes handing from the armpits and ears. Skinning the paws out was the worst. You could just feel them stampede up your arm.

Awful.

This is so freakin' gross! I can live in a world with the Taliban. Ticks, I couldn't handle. I need to get a cyanide pill! Really! I live in the woods, no ticks on me ever, although my Dad had one on his balls years ago. 1 on the cat 1 on the dog, in 45 years.

That was probably me, the product is called Horse Guard, it comes in a one liter spray bottle and one gallon containers. It's relatively cheap , around $11/$27 respectively.

I found my first deer tick in south eastern manitoba last week, seems like the buggers were moving as soon as the snow melted.

google 'tick twister' the ONLY way to instantly and safely remove ticks, Ive used it on my self and dogs. They are about $3
