A police investigation has been launched after a 32-year-old woman was mauled to death by a tiger near 100 Mile House, B.C., officials confirmed Friday.

The woman's two young children witnessed the horrific attack. She also survived long enough to speak with her fiancé over a cellphone.

The victim has been identified as Tanya Dumstrey-Soos by her employer, Scott Nelson. The woman's finace is Kim Carlton, who owns the property where the attack occurred.

Carlton was out of town at the time and rushed to be with Dumstrey-Soos, but she died before he arrived.

Regional coroner Bruce Chamberlayne told The Canadian Press that Dumstrey-Soos was taken to hospital after the attack Thursday afternoon but couldn't be revived.

Carlton is the owner and operator of Siberian Magic, a private zoo at Bridge Lake.

"This is a gentleman who owned a property in B.C.'s Lower Mainland in Abbotsford and kept tigers and cougars and then moved to 100 Mile House ... and kept these large game cats there," CTV's Vancouver Bureau Chief Todd Battis reported.

It's unclear how the attack unfolded but early reports suggest the woman was mauled through the cage.

In the past, Carlton has come under scrutiny for appearing with his Siberian tiger in public.

But Carlton has defended his actions, saying he raised awareness of animal extinction through his tiger.

Visitors to the zoo can have their photo taken with a variety of exotic animal, including the Siberian tiger Kisa, or the African lion Sarmoti, according to the Siberian Magic website.

Carlton pursued a career in animal training and magic after retiring from professional fighting.

He is the father of three children; his son, Kodiak, and his twin girls, Dakota and Dallas.

The only big cat that I would trust is a Cheetah. The others, well, I do not belive that they can ever been fully tamed.

This is very sad.

Indeed. In fact, one of the younger members called this happening around a month ago. This guy came up in a convo and there was a comment along the lines of - I wonder how long until it kills someone.

On other news, I guess concealed carry defence tigers are out of the question now...

As I mentioned before, here in the Cowichan Valley there is a "petting zoo" that has just acquired a Siberian Bengal mix, and the former owner/trainer said it's behaviour was "sketchy", so it will be interesting how things turn out.

This was just a couple of miles from my house. I was at a restaraunt on the same property earlier this month celebrating my wife's birthday. Sad. :(

I've seen the cats in a trailer when I happened to park next to it at the local store, but never went to his property to have pictures taken which he offered for a fee. You often step out of a car in a parking lot to be surprised by a large dog in a nearby vehicle, imagine stepping out to realize you are looking into the eyes of a siberian tiger on the other side of wire mesh.

I remember joking that they had the one house in the area that nobody was going to break into, as the tigers and lion are kept in the house.

Sounds like it was just batting at her dress playfully and got hold of her leg.

I got the perfect idea for an anti-tiger wildcat - a 12.7x108mm cartridge, rimmed, blown out into a straight-walled cartridge firing 1000-grain solid copper flat-nosed bullets.

Blow 'em away! :D

- Dave.

You're an idiot !

Very unfortunate accident for the lady in question, I would never wish that on anyone. BUT, I went and looked at this siberianmagic web site and my impression was that this guy is a fool. In fact anyone who places their children in the lap of a tiger or lion is a fool. Sooory, but I call it animal exploitation and they got just what was stacked in the deck. Gamble and then you loose. I hope that the tiger will not be destroyed. Still, I do feel for that poor girl.

The tiger has been put down. I haven't heard yet the fate of the other cats, but they had a number of large vans there today with police escort, so hopefully they have found somewhere suitable to care for them.
