Tight 5 round mags on RFB - My fast fix.

I've posted this over at Vault's forum as well when I discovered that others were having the same issue I was. 2 of the 3 factory magazines were incredibly tight and wouldn't fit the gun. These two had specific issues of a slightly larger spine that was easy to correct with very slight "squishing" of the sheet metal body. That said, they all shared another problem. The tab at the back of the floor plate extended beyond the magazine body - and would jam into the mag well - making things very tight.

Here's a few pics of how I corrected this with a very simple bend. Crappy cell phone camera, so I apologize in advance about the quality of the images.

You can see in this pic how close the tolerance is at the spine of the magazine. The un-altered magazine floor plate would wedge into the polymer groove, and jam up the magazine insertion and removal pretty well. Not wanting to damage a $2400 gun, I bent up the tab to clear the back of the mag well.

I had tested my theory by removing the floor plate and trying the insertion of a magazine. Fit was fine. I gently bent the sheet metal tab to 90 degrees, and re-installed it. Mags work well.

Here's a side view of the mag after the subtle bend.

Hope this helps anyone with the same issue I had.

The mags were a penny shy of $50 bucks each... I quite like the little un-pinned 5 rounders - they fit nicely into the hunting pocket. I'm still trying to get my hands on a few 10/5 mags - I think that size would be perfect. Large enough to manipulate easily - small enough to put in the pocket of my hunting jacket.

If you want to trade a 20/5 (or 30/5, if anyone has one!) for a 5-rounder, I have one of those little ones I'd be happy to provide!

i dont get why they chose to use a rock and lock magazine like the FAL, rather then a common SR-25 mag that was designed to be inserted vertically

metric fal mags in the states are far far cheaper than .308 AR mags

i remember seeing them just a few years ago sell by the case (20 mags) down there for $75

The tab could easily be snipped off, but you would lose the hole needed to pull the floor plate off. Another hole could be drilled a little farther back, but all that was more work then the small bend.
In terms rock and lock mag insertion, my mags seem to go straight up and in, just like the manual says.
