I've owned both, and both have strong points.
The brownings I've owned, (A bolt and A bolt micro-medallion) , both had super wood stocks. Finish was among the best I've ever seen on an out-of-the-box rifle. The actions are bedded from the factory, and the triggers were awesome. Not a huge fan of magazines that can't be fed from the top, but there was no denying the fact that the mags were hard to lose.
The tikka's , although a lot more "utilitarian" in the looks department, shot just as well. The bolts were the smoothest I've ever flung forwards and backwards. It shot great, and was reasonably priced. The stock weren't flimsy either(synthetic), but , like all other synthetics, too light for most bigger calibers.
The heavier laminates only reduce recoil because they take more force to send backwards, therefore, soaking up some of it on its way to your shoulder.
I truly didn't like the browning offerings for many years................until I actually held one. I immediately forgot why I had something against them. My vote for this is:
Browning>Tikka
The feeling of quality just oozes off the brownings. I can't quite describe it. Just the most well feeling, solidly put together rifles I've ever owned/shot. Haven't held an X Bolt, but they look sharp, and I can't imagine them shooting poorly...........but I need another safe first, before I need any more rifles.
