Tikka T3/Remington 700?

I have both a T-3 and a couple of 700s. I think the Tikka is a better (at least with a comparable model 700) right out of the box. They have good triggers that can be easily adjusted, slick actions, and possibly better accuracy (without tweaking). I like the looks of the 700 better, and as already mentioned there a far more after market goodies available for the Remington.

There's no doubt that 700s are accurate, but for mine I needed to adjust the trigger on both from the lawyer proof way they come from the factory, and I also bedded one of them to help it shoot better. I like both, it's just that my 700s needed a little more work to shoot as well as the Tikka did right out of the box. Your mileage may differ...

Buy the one that fits you best, you can't go wrong with either rifle or cartridge. If you can try each one out to see which one you like to shoot more. I like Remingtons quite a bit, and I would also buy a Tikka, as I like the look and reputation that they have. At the gun store, they seem to fit me alright. Good luck.

When at the target range, i prefer to load my cart. singly from the top, not possible,(for me anyway) with the Tikka. In my experience, Remingtons are more accurate then most, including tikkas, I am currently fighting with a Tikka, heavy stainless, varmint, .222 Rem.....it just doesn't shoot as well as most of my Remingtons.
Loading one round, singly from the top is still faster in emerg. then loading a mag. or installing the mag. in rifle, then closing the bolt.

Ben all you have to do is leave the mag in rifle, drop a round into the chamber and close the bolt. Its just like my 700 mtn rifle. You cant load the mag from the chamber because its single stack.

- a statemen, the Norinco M-14S really caught my eye, but then I found out that no more shipments of new ones would come anymore. Woe is me :'(.

Buying Chinese will certainly expedite this apocalypse you mentioned. You have to ask yourself: "Am I part of the problem or part of the solution?"

Oldfart...can I just call you fart?? Your theory does not work as the shell gets hung up with the point always hitting the rear of the barrel or some such and rarely slides right into the chamber. With the 700 I can shove the shell right into the chamber, with the Tikka i can not, it is not handy at all.

Ben is right about drop loading in the Tikka-- it just doesn't work, because there is about a 1.5" area just before the chamber that isn't tapered or anything where the round will catch the point before going into the chamber. I've tried dropping them in as well with almost no luck. It's faster just to load the mag and pop it back in believe it or not.

HugeGoat, you're all over the place here, now you want a Norc M14?! They are way fun to shoot and the new ones are quite accurate out of the crate even, but most often they need a little touching up to really get humming.
What exactly are you looking for in a rifle? It sounds like you're torn between wanting to win 1000 yard target competitions and fighting off an alien invasion all at once. Here's a solution for you:

1- Go buy a Norinco SKS for around $200 plus 1120 round of ammo for another $200--- now you're ready for any sort of invasion or plinking fun.

2- Go buy the Tikka T3 Varmint in .308 so you can hunt or win target competitions right out of the box with no modifications other than adding a scope.

Do this and all you'll want afterwards are lots of pistols :D

Ben my 338 fed works like a charm, top loading, one at a time. Are you putting the shells in backwards? Its pointy end first.

not going to touch the Tikka thing.

you should check out the Ruger bolt actions, IMO they are a nicer gun than either the T3 or the 700 at roughly the same price.

Im pitted between which 2 rifles to get after that though (I cant afford both :p).

remember that decent glass is going to cost you at least $300-400, plus rings and bases.

I agree with Ben about top loading the Tikka. For the bush I prefer bottom loading with plastic.

Hi mackillan,if you and Ben say you have trouble top loading i dont doubt it , so the feeding must be cartridge specific it would be interesting to find which work. Mine works as i stated. If either of you are in the Merritt area i would be pleased to show you. To make it worthwhile if it doesnt, i will give the rifle.

vs

Im astounded that the T3 lite is nearly as accurate as a 700. I like the T3 as I like a clip and I like to have fast movement in the bush. I never thought that it was as accurate. I only shoot at paper plates in rapid fire with the T3 on the range. The T3 in 300 win mag has a massive wallop so I would assume that it wouldnt be as accurate on the second shot lol

Now that is putting your money where your pie hole is.

That definitely seems to be the case cause my 6.5x55 also doesn't top feed without a little help into the chamber first. I don't find it a big deal though.

604 shooter, i too ,dont find it a big deal, until that big buck disappears into the bush and we're still fighting to get the round out and put back in so it will slide into the chamber....Ben
