Really looking to start out in long range shooting...opened up my newspaper today and saw a huge flyer for Basspro.

Inside theres a special on a Tikka T3 Syn/Blue for $599, comes with free case/sling and hat.

Is this a good deal? It comes in 270, 7mm rem mag, 300 win mag
Whats the cheapest ammo but will still hit accurately?

Also theres a one day sale on a Leupold 3-9x40 VX-1 Rifle Scope for $250

It is a good price for a very good rifle - I own many firearms including some very expensive ones and my favorite moose rifle is a Tikka T3 Lite S/S synth in 300 WM. As far as the caliber, it would depend on what you intend to hunt and how comfortable you are with recoil. All of these will kill a moose at distances beyond 250 yds but the 300 WM might be better suited. The 270 will usually have the least recoil and the 300 WM, the most As far as the price of ammo, the 300 WM will be more expensive but not enough to be a big factor in making a choice.

A lot of the hunters that I know who hunt moose have selected the 7mm Mag as a compromise between power and recoil. A lot of hunter are not comfortable with the 300 WM recoil but can tolerate the 7mm Mag. The 270 is also a good caliber for moose but might required better bullet placement under certain conditions.

Good luck!

I woulnt be reloading so i guess .270...whats the accurate range on this round? I have a massive 1000 yard stretch of open land on my farm i could use for target practice.

Also te remington model 700 ADL is on sale for $449, in .308, 223, 30-06

Well i wouldn't use it as a hunting rifle, more of a paper puncher at long ranges (300+) so i can get a feel for long range shooting...I'd also keep it around for the odd bear that keeps coming harassing our animals.

The Tikka T3 will give you out-of-the-box very good accuracy - usually better than most North American out-of-the-box firearms.

As far as long range target shooting, the 300 WM will usually outperform these other 2. But using a 300 WM for routine paper punching might be hard to justify.

So i guess it's between the Tikka in .270 and the 700 ADL in .308

ADL is $150 cheaper, and in a caliber im more familiar with...will i need to buy scope rings for both? Is either better to "build on" with mods later on?

My dad has a Bushnell Elite I think i could probably swipe from his remington .308

They also have a Winchester Model 70 Ultimate Shadow in ,270 for $888

You might want to compare prices for the ring as rings for a Tikka could be significantly more expensive than ones for a Remington ADL. For example, the Tikka Optilock rings and bases will cost you over $100 where a set of Weaver bases and rings might run you as low as between $25 and $30.

But always keep in mind that you usually get what you pay for, unless you are talking about special promotional drives. And don't forget the EE forum where excellent purchases can be made.

X2. The Tikka that you mentioned seems like a good deal, but be sure to check out the equipment exchange forums first. Most likely you will find deals on guns in there that you might like even more. When I buy my stuff, I always look on the ee first before heading out to the local stores. Good luck on the purchase!!

Not to sound rude or anything but isnt that rifle more of a hunting rig?? Its very light, short barrel ect... Wouldnt a heavy barrel be better to start out with??
Savage has an entry level heavy barrel w/ accutrigger for about $550 and would shoot as good as a Tikka with all the cal. options.

Cheers!!

nono not rude at all, this is what im trying to figure out...i'm really a long range rifle noob. What model savage is that?

I see theres a brand new unfired Savage 11F in .308 for $500

For being a good out-of-box gun, you can't beat a Tikka, but for availability of match ammo for optimal long distance results (assuming you are not reloading) none of the calibres they're selling with the deal is readily available as a factory match round.

The 7mm rem mag is an excellent 1000 yard round and so is the 300WM. Given the number of records being set with .284 rounds, I'd go 7mm myelf. Neither will be comfortable to shoot, especially in the T3 lite.

I would think a 308 adl is a good choice too, because the action has limitless potential and there is a ton of good 308 match ammo available for using right now, but understand that as a hunting rifle (actually, both are) using factory ammo, there will be limits on long range accuracy. Plenty of accuracy for hitting a big hunk of old steel farm machinery to hear the satisfying GONG at 1000 yards though...

Okay lets say I were to expand my budget a bit more, to around $1400 with Optics...how would a Rem 700 Police in .308 do?

How much for a good scope mount?

My thoughts exactly. A target gun usually has a heavy barrel and often times a wider forend on the stock for riding a benchrest better. Furthermore, a .270 is hardly a competetive long range cartridge. It'd certainly do alright, but you'll find a much better selection of match bullets in 6.5/7mm/.308.

For the money, I'd recommend a Savage 10FP, preferably with the Choate, HS or MacMillan stock.

A 3-9 scope is also hardly a target scope as well. I'd go 4-12 MINIMUM, or 6-24 preferable. Side parallax, 30mm tube and mildots are certainly nice-to-haves. The Leupold VX-III series has the good stuff, and Bushy 4200's are quite reasonable as well.

Why not go with a Tikka T3 Varmint in maybe a 6.5x55. Heavy barrel, fast twist. Take it out of the box, mount a good scope in a set if Burris rings with inserts and go shooting.

Or the Tikka tactical, if that sort of thing turns your crank. I think it looks ricey and I hate the tikka injection-moulded stocks, but they do shoot. My money'd buy me a Savage 10FP or 700p over wither Tikka though.

I have one, it shoots .... see above ;)

I have a tactical in 308 as well and it is awesome. Maynard's advice: T3 Varmint in 6.5X55 is bang on. You had alluded to a more frugal price point though.

excuse my ignorance, but what cartridge is 6.5X55??

i need something a little more frugal...ahhhhh choices

nobody really likes that .700 ADL in .308 huh
