Tikka Tactical = ripoff?

the Tikka Varmint at $793 at LeBaron right now, i will admit, seems like a really good deal. (im counting their November 10% off and the Lebaron card 7% off that applies right now).

the problem with the Tikka Tactical IMO is they tack on $1000 onto the price tag but really there isnt much to show for it. a $60 picatinny rail, a threaded muzzle so they can sell an overpriced $300 muzzle brake, an adjustable comb and some sling swivel sockets. 'guaranteed 1MOA' doesnt really mean much when that is what you demand from any Remington, Savage or Tikka in the varmint/tactical class anyway. you can buy a $280 Stevens and shoot sub-MOA, so what do they want for claiming that on a $1700 gun - a cookie?

again i am not saying that the Tikka Tactical is a bad gun, but IMO fair Tikka pricing should be something like this (based on what else you can get out there):

Tikka T3 plainjane: $549
Tikka T3 Laminate/Stainless: $699
Tikka Varmint: $799
Tikka Super Varmint: $1099
Tikka Tactical: $1249

$1700 for the tactical is rediculous.
keep in mind that the Tikka super varmint and tactical are currently $300-700 above the price of Remington 700 Senderos, Police, VSSF IIs, etc.

ugh prosper beat me to it :runaway:
if they improved the stocks on the high end Tikkas to something comparable to the HS Precision stocks on the high end Remingtons, and dropped the price a little, i would have no complaints.

ive heard the 'its already done for you, its a great tactical gun out of the box' argument several times.
but buying a remmy 700, an awesome aftermarket stock like the Mcmillan or AICS and a Jewell trigger, and spending an hour bolting it together is hardly 'extensive gunsmithing', and its fun to boot.
thats just an example, you could also buy a Savage 10FP and put together a nice tactical rig for way cheaper than either the Tikka or Remington. i also picked a rediculously expensive stock for the Remington (AICS) and the best trigger on the market and it still comes out to less than the Tikka.

It boils down to choice. If you break this argument down on strict financial terms, then you cannot win the argument. I see lots of remington 700's here with expensive window dressing at the expense of tangible modifications that will make a bigger difference to accuracy. I like and own Tikkas and many Remingtons. Not one of the Remy actions I own was true and required a couple hundred bucks worth of accurizing and lapping (Including three XR-100 "Target masters"), yet I use them as the action of choice for all my competition rigs. They are fine actions.

The Tikka Tactical represents a package that needs nothing. It looks different, it feels different, and it's put together differently. They are superbly accurate. I cannot defend how or why they are priced the way they are.

I get tired of all these "such and such is overpriced" arguments.

Judgment on the perceived fair cost of something can only be decided by an individual's want/need of it.

If you can afford a thing, and you want it, who is to say if it is overpriced or not? It may be for you, but not for me.
A glass of water is never overpriced to a thirsty man. Maybe you're just not thirsty.

ps, I own a T3 Tac, love it, will never sell it, and paid 1300 new for it years ago in a dealer clear out, so I got the best of both worlds.

I have the high end Remington's in tactical and target in 308. I also have a custom on a remington action in 308 that has a gaillard barrel it has been blue printed and squared and has had the rigger work done by gaillard it sits in a macmillan stock it is the only rifle that will outshoot my Tikka tactical in 308 cosistantly. I am and always have been a remington fan, I worked up my loads for all of my rifles and strive for the sub 3/4 inch groups. The Gaillard built will one hole at 100 yds and holds 1/2 inch angle all the way out to 600 yds, as far as i shoot now. The Tikka tactical 308 shot .7 of an inch out of the box with 168s and i have been trying different loads in the 43-45.5 grain range with Varget and it still holds .7 and will holds this angle out to 600 yds. I just wish my Remington's had the smooth bolt slide of the Tikka tactical.
My Remington's shoot very well from the $900.00 dollar ones to the $2200.00 dollar one.The $1500.00 Tikka tactical 308 wiil shoot with any of them, no shipping time no ordering for parts to upgrade just out of the box scope it and shoot.
I still like my Remington's better only because i like to order and tinker to get them better. Do i have faith that my next high end Remington out of the box will out shoot the Tikka Tactical out of the box, lets put it this way i'm not going to put money on it.

Here is a little question and please forgive my ignorance. I am really thinking of purchasing a Tikka varmint in 223x 8 twist. Dose the Tikka varmint and the tactical have the exact same action and are they lapped/blue printed to the same specs or at all?
Thanks

I got to handle one of these recently for the first time. I'm sure they shoot well, but how are these rifles worth $1700+tax? :runaway:

am I missing something? they *should* sell for $1100-1200

I had my share with the Tikka rifles, specially the T3 Varmint, in 6.5X55, 223 and 308win, they not as good shooter as rem700VS or PSS, I try many load for my T3 Varmint in 308, the accuracy was never near that of the reminton700Pss, samething go for the 223 Varmint, and also try out my buddy T3 Tactical, in my opinion, they are over prices for what you get, that for sure!...

Well said Delta1 and Dave machine, You get what you pay for it"s that simple.
have owned lots of Remington's and the one that put me off the most was a Remington Sendaro in 300 mag $900 for gun $500 in bolt & receiver work 6 weeks wait for work to be done .End result 1 inch at 100 with match 175 Mk. Try ed ever powder and primer combination. Tikka 3 Varmint 308 out of the box Optilock rings 1/2 inch or less with about any powder that you want to use. Sako and Tikka are the only guns that I will buy Take them out of the box turn down the triggers and go shooting. That is what a rifle should be

Tikka

I find the Tikka to have a smoother action than a Rem 700. 500 isnt really meaningful to me as it is a half days work at my part time job. I would be weeks dropping in triggers etc at the mercy of shyster so called gunsmiths. I have no ability to do it myself. If it works out I will buy the higher end gun mentioned here. I would have to buy something customized. Any recommendations. It would be 300 or 7mm mag. I have a blinds set up for whitetail and deer and out of the box is all I have the expertise to handle. I can lay them down easy as pie all set up with a gun like this. I have a Ruger .204 with a bipod and it is a gas zapping rodents. Is the higher end gun mentioned already customized?

tikka

There are the guys that:

Own a Tikka
Wish they owned a Tikka
Complain about the price (This is a sub group of the well wishers)

Really, it is nice that you do not have to 'mess' with it. Tinkering can be fun but IMO it is also over rated. Some one made a comment about shister gunsmiths - I agree.... The Tikka comes from the factory ready to go!

I have guns that I tinker with but seriously I do not want every gun to require a bunch of work... Fighting with increasing accuracy is a PITA......

To me it is not a money thing..... it is about simplicity

I own a Tik-Tac - I got it with the break, sling, extra mag, & 25 MOA rail - 100% happy....

To answer the question: No, it's not a ripoff, but it is overpriced. A ripoff is when you pay ridiculously more than what you could elsewhere. Overpriced is when you pay a lot more than what it actually costs to manufacture something. That is the case with the TikTac, but really it is the case with all Tikkas I would say.
I don't care though. I would go buy my Tikka Varmint again without hesitation. Each time my friend and I go shooting our rifles together and he gets a turn with mine, all he can say is "man it's like a laser beam" and "I should just bite the bullet and buy one of these, they're so nice to shoot". To me that settles it.

Since you like Tikka, consider the Tikka varminter in a 7RM or 300WM. The ones around here competing at 1000m at shooting sub MOA and winning in factory class.

They do shoot very well and are overpriced.

But that is your time and 'labour' mucking about with another brand.

Jerry

A little off topic here but I get a kick out of hunters who claim they can shoot dime sized groups at 100 yards leaning over a fallen tree. Or the guys whos group size gets smaller then he originally stated because the guy next to him tells a story about his gun shooting even better. And then theres the guys who will not buy a certian brand of rifle because his truck hunting buddy missed a record buck after they slammed on the breaks and opened up on a deer as it dashed thru the bush with the same brand and says the rifle is no good.

Sendero vs Tikka Tactical

Those Sederos are heavy for being a hunting rifle, eh?

Actually Tikka Varmint stainless price have gone down a hundred dollar compare to Rem700PSS.

Tikka varmint Stainless : $900
REM700PSS : $1100

I'd rather use a balsa wood stock with a .338 than have to sit behind an AI stock. I hate their design. uncomfortable and ugly as sin. IMHO. so for me I'd get the Tikka instead of wasting my money on tricking out a Remington. the most important thing to consider is whether or not you like the gun. if so, buy it. the Tikka is not overpriced. Is $10,000 too much for an AMP-DSR? nope, $6500 for an AI (yes, to me, but not to others), $3300 for a TRG-22/42, nope, love mine, plan on buying another one.
