I have always wanted to build a 284win on a Model 70 shortaction receiver as they are slightly longer and will let you seat the bullets out a bit to take full advantage of the 284's case capacity!

If you want to us a Rem 700 short action receiver then obviously the 7mm-08 would be the best choice.

Win 70 short action receiver then either the 7mm-08 or 284 and the 7x57 will work through it as well.

Either Win 70 or Rem 700 long action would be best suited to the 280rem or the 7x57.

I've also chronographed lots of ammo and don't find you give up all that much with the 7mm-08 compared with the 280. I don't have an opinion on the other two calibers as I have no first hand experience with them. The 284 should be a good caliber but ammo and brass may be difficult to obtain. I can't see where the 7x57 offers much over the 7mm-08 other than nostalgia.

Last summer I was handed a slim 7X57 Brno 600 that I had never fired before, but which I had been anxious to try for sometime. Leaning over a stack of pallets I sighted on a 500 yard 12" gong, guesstimating the drop and holding for the 20 mph breeze. I pressed the trigger, felt a nudge on my shoulder, and was rewarded a moment later with the sound of a first round cold bore hit. The load pushed a 140 gr TTSX at 2900, and while any mild 7mm could have done likewise, none could have done it better. Not only is the 7X57 nostalgic, it is also as ballistically relevant. Over normal hunting ranges, the so called advantage of the .280 and the 7 mag over a 7X57 handloaded with mid-weight bullets cannot be realized; much like the relationship between the .30/06 and the .308 when both are loaded with 150s. When the shorter 7mm cartridges are squeezed into short action rifles, long 7mm bullets must be seated deeply into the powder capacity of their cases if they are to cycle through the magazines, resulting in lower velocities or higher pressures with similar velocities. A 7X57 can match the velocities of the modern short cartridges with less pressure, yet like the longer .280, without the base of the bullet extending below the shoulder of the cartridge, even with the heaviest bullets.

Are you sure the 7x57 will work on a short action M70 receiver? I tried stuffing some in there and it seems just a bit too short (newest iteration of the M70).
