Tips For New IPSC Shooters

Thanks everyone for your advice, but i need more... :p
I'm planning on using a Smith and Wesson M&P40,with a bladetech holster and two double mag pouches and a 1.5" belt....is this a good setup? I also have a Cz75 SP-01 and a Steyr M9-A1 but i don't have any holsters, any mag pouches or any extra mags for those two, so i won't be using them for my BB course. What are the most common things people get DQ for? Also a fellow at my range was telling me that the ammo that i normally shoot with, will not pass the chrono(federal 165grain FMJ ball). So what do i need for ammunition to shoot ipsc? Thanks a million everyone

Stop whoring about getting DQed. You are looking at from the wrong aspect, You are focusing on getting DQed. That is wrong. Focus on being safe there is a difference. Focus on finger control ( keeping it out of the trigger guard when moving ) focus on muzzle control focus on shot placement , smooth draws. Focus on positive aspect's of the game not the negative. If you look at it this way you will go alot farther and not to mention have more Fun .

As for ammo you will learn all about that in your B/B coarse.
See you have already learned a lesson in taking advice from other people. Some people will give you the wrong advice thinking it is the wright advice, the key is to learn the difference. It is a trial and aerier.

Do not be afraid to experiment that is what this game is all about.

Just my 2 cents

I'm not worried about DQing just wondering about certain aspects of this sport. Safety is always on the top of my mind when handling firearms, just ask my friends...lol! I'm just worried about this course.

Stop warring about the course and just relax.

Relax and just breath. If you can hit a 8" x 11" peace of paper at twenty yard consistently and not point your gun any were but down range you will be fine.

The biggest problem is people get all worked about the course when they should be having fun

OK... I don't get it!

I started shooting IPSC almost a year ago, and all the equipment I've bought hasn't made my score any better.....

Do you suppose I have to get out to the range and actually shoot some??:runaway:

No. Shooting is for sissy's. Just buy a more expe$ive gun and you should be fine.

yup more money on gear will make a huge difference. NOT!
dry fire practice is the cheapest and most effective thing you can do, once you learn what to do, and how to do it properly. Beyond that don't go into the BB with any concerns. I don't know of anyone who hasn't passed it on their first go.

Actually, I assisted on a course where an individual was asked to take the course again, which he did, and passed on the second attempt.

I also wasn't going to pass an individual who took the course from me a couple of years ago but he decided to quit instead......

My policy is that if I feel you're not ready for IPSC competitions after the course is over, that there is no charge for any subsequent attempts.

Don't worry about the course. Just remember the essentials of "sight picture, squeeze" and "only keep your finger on the trigger when shooting" and you'll be fine.

As for your first match: if you're in BC, I like rum & coke or a good martini. Ceasar's are good, too. :D

I think my first match will be in ontario but if i ever end up in BC and my liver forgives me for new years, we'll meet up for a drink or "two" :D

Anyone here taking the BB course in gormley on Feb 5th,10th,and 11th?

Get some snap caps and dry fire a lot, you'll get better quicker and cheaper. You can do a considerate amount of practice at home, just hang a classic target to the wall and practice you draws and reloads as well as dry firing, don't hesitate to practice one handed and weak handed ;)

HR RAGE, you have an SP01? I would really think of using it for IPSC. Get yourself a holster for it! My Black Badge instructor uses one, and recommends them to everyone he see's! I used his old Glock, and have since bought one of my own with an Uncle Mike's Kydex holster..very cheap set up that works like a charm for me!..If the RO points me in the right direction I sometimes even hit a target or two!! Cheers, and good luck!!

I really want to use my SP-01 but holsters, mag pouches and mags are really hard to come by around here, but when i do get my hands on those items i'll switch over to the SP-01. I have way better aim with the SP-01, I just don't like the trigger!

Call Frank at 2alpha inc...he has what you;re lookimng for.

He can also be reached at CTM (Range in Montreal)

He has a sponsors link at the top of the page.

Freedom Ventures should also have Holsters and pouches for you.

Both are great companies to deal with

aside from holster I have everything else, I can get you the mag pouches out tomorrow as well as the CR belt but I need your size. Send me PM with your address

Don't sweat the BB Course that much. Before I took mine, I have very limitted shooting experience for handguns. I'd shot some trap and did some big game hunting. Most of my handgun shooting was from a stationary position without any stress.

A lot of the rules and details can be confusing and will be made much clearer by the BB instructor.

Focus on safe firearms handling and muzzle control during the course.

Listen, Listen, Listen to your instructor.

After the course, Practice, Practice, Practice. I don't do it enough and I'm a weak shooter. Accuracy is important, but there are lots of things to practice, like drawing from the holster, mag changes ect.

Attend any fun matches, drills or get togethers that IPSC shooters put together. Speed will come with experience. Watch other shooters and learn the good and bad from their techniques.

Talk to Dragoon. He sells some good Videos and lots of books that can help you with your drills and practice on your own.

Visit the IPSC Alberta website, read and chat with other members.

It's lots of fun. Hope to see you at a match sometime.
