Tiriaq Defense thread ...

HAHAHA love the replies ... especially the politician one! HAHAHA! Inuk ladies are funny ... some have no problems shooting seals, tuktu and even bears ... but a bloody tiriaq comes out and they're jumping around screaming KILL IT KILL IT ... ;)

Not to mention mosquitoes, or bumble bees. Bumble bees are one of the most dangerous threats an Inuk lady can face.

I once told my wife to "get a grip" after freaking out over bugs. She did not talk to me for three days....:slap:

Lately I've found the local lynx population more of a bother. Again I've spotted them in my latest bunny hunting spot. I'm beginning to wonder if those wild kitty kats have secretly planted a GPS transponder on my truck! :p

I really have to get a camera for these neat encounters.
 
Why shoot them. Best rodent control hands down. They do most of their evil deed where no cat or owl can go, down the barrows (Rat and Rabbit). Very vicious but also very effective. I was very happy to see one by my Cabin last fall, as I have been seeing more and more rats around my cabin.

In Nunavut we don't have a rodent problem really ... siksiks(ground squirrels)hibernate all winter and so do Lemmings ... these tiriaq's are out and about all winter ... apparently quite a few in town lately. ;)

Thats very true about weasels and chickens, but I remember one winter as a kid on the prairies when we had a weasel live in the chicken barn and never touched a single bird, possibly because the neighboring hog barn had a lot of rats and mice. Actually the dumb chickens became accustomed to seeing the little fella, although it made Dad nervous... :)

Seems to me that chickens are delicious to everyone: cayotes, weasels, racoons, people, can't fault them for going after them, you just need a better place to keep them at night. All the animals have a place, and play an important role, if one becomes too troublesome, he may become a competitor, but don't hate the player, hate the game, or up your game.
 
When I lived in Arviat, a friend had a tiriaq living under his house. It must have emerged right in front of his dog, so the dog ate it. Shortly thereafter, the dog regurgitated the tiriaq on the living room floor. It must not have agreed with the dog. Must have been pretty unpleasant, given that dogs will eat darn near anything.
