I want to start reload handgun ammo and try to make it simple. My friend tells me that he only use Titegroup for all, including 40 S&W,357 Magnum and 45 ACP. Is it possible?

Your friend is probably right, Titegroup shoots really well in my .45 Colt...It is not position sensitive at all.

For new handgun reloaders I recommend using Trail Boss. It is relatively fast powder, so getting absolute maximum loads are iffy without hitting high pressure, but is great for moderate loads.

It is clean burning but most importantly it is designed as a bulky powder that makes it much less likely to miss seeing a double charge. It is one less thing a new reloader has to worry about until they get into a "reloading rhythm" after a thousand rounds or so.

I use Tightgroup for the same calibers, and especially in 357, you probably wouldn't see a double charge.

I'm new to this as well (my stuff isn't even here yet ), and also intend to use Titegroup.
My main reason is the variety of loads I will be running, especially the .357 and .44 mag... as I intend to load them light.
All the reading I've done says that Titegroup is not position sensitive, which is very important when using small amounts in these larger cases.
My loading will be a slow process anyways, as I am going single stage for now, but the "double drop" warning is very relevant.
As an aside to this, where do you buy your Titegroup (or Trail Boss, for that fact)? Is Goble's the only spot in SWO?

To the original poster Win 231 is a very versatile and economical powder and does well in two of the three cartridges mentioned (.40Cal & .45acp).

I would look at Win 296 or 2400 for the .357 magnum depending on the weight of bullet you intend to use and the application you are using the pistol for.

All three of the powders mentioned flow very well through most powder measures. Just take your time, read a lot and you will be just fine.

Take Care

Alliant's Promo

Have used Titegroup and most other powders. An all-round poweder is a good idea and has many applications. That's why I use Promo. It is sold in 8 pound containers in my region for C$95.00 per container.
It has the same burning properties of Aliant's RedDot powder, which is a tad slower, I believe, than Titegroup.
It works fine in 9mm, 40, 45, 38spl and 38spl+p. You can get some very nice moderate to medium loads to work very well in 44 special too. If you fire 357 magnum, Promo will give you half to 2/3 mag loads.
Add 14% to C$95.00 and divide by 8. You get around $14.00 per pound. 25 years ago I was buying WW231 for 13.00 a pound.
I also like Alian't new powder ClayDot and IMR's 700X. All are in the same range.

I was going through my .40cal charts last might, I have Titegroup only listed for 180gr XTP starting at 4.1gr, I suspect that 180 T.M.J. will be happy with this? I load for economy not power at this point.

I use TG for both .40S@W, around 4.8-9gr with 1.17" OAL and
5.2gr for .45ACP with 1.20" OAL
Very good powder and not expensive to buy.

I use TG in 9mm, 40 SW & 45 ACP:
> 9mm: 125 grns FMJ head, OAL 1.1000", 3.9 grns TG
> 40 SW: 180 grns FMJ head, OAL 1.180", 5-5.1 grns TG (This is Chronoed to make the major 180 PF in IPSC).
> 45 ACP: 230 grns FMJ head, OAL 1.20", 5.0 grns

Good luck and Reload safely. :)

Nognog hit nail right on the head.

those are all great loads!

I use all 3 of those and almost bang on to what he listed.

I load 38 and 357 as well but I use Blue dot and they are loaded hot.

TG is a good all round powder if you wanted to stick to with only one and its priced really good!

last time i used unique, a tad dirty was an UNDERSTATEMENT-in an indoor range, a cylinder full of the stuff is second only to black powder in terms of spreading smoke clouds- as far as 231 goes, it's good for all three- sure you don't get max velocities in the 357, but also look at the loads- your 2400 or what have you are typically almost DOUBLE the weight in powder- i even use 231 in the 44 mag-

I shot a LB of Titegroup, didn't like it, it was economical and fairly accurate BUT it burns VERY hot! Few shots and you can iron a shirt with the gun.

but yes you can use it for .40, 357 and .45 - most pistol powders will do that as well! If you want Hodgdon get HS-6 insted...
