To buy a .410 or not to buy a .410

I had a cooeys in 410 and 28 gauge. The 410 was better for small kids to shoot, since the kick is pretty mild. The 28 kicked too much for small kids but was better for hunting.
So I Sold the 410 to a guy with kids and kept the 28 gauge. So, if you don't have a 28 gauge yet or kids to take shooting, get a 28 instead.

Bought myself a Boito .410 to toss in the pack.
So far...no complaints.
Made myself a new fore end.

Have shot slugs, bird shot and some 5 shot 000.

With recoil pad removed, firearm is approx 27".

I like them, for grouse or rabbits they are all thats required most times. I cleaned out a barn full of pigeons once with one, it did the job quite well.

Savage makes a brake action .22 LR/.410 I don't remember what the model is a bud of mine has it and often lends it to me for rabbit hunting... I love that thing and often want to buy one when I have money to blow yet blow my money on other stupid stuff then reel bad for not getting my own... BUY ONE NOW... Go get one do it they are great guns and the .410 is very good for rabbit hunting trust me I live in Alberta any idea how many rabbits we have here??

I have a NEF single shot .410 that i picked up back in the eighties. It is indestructible and probably the most used hunting gun I own. I keep it in the truck all hunting season and I've been loading my own rounds for just over a dime a shot, but I'm not sure I would have much use for it if it was not for chicken hunting.

I've tried them on squirrels but find them underpowered when it comes to shooting through brush and leaves. It works better in late fall if you can get one on the open ground or an a clear branch, but the lack of killing power/range makes me second-guess too many shots to use one consistently on the bushy tails.

Great starter gun, however, for kids and anyone else wanting to learn shotgunning.

About a year ago, I picked up an old C.I.L. branded one for $50 that someone I knew found in the back of the closet. I'm not at all sorry I bought it, but it is definitely a gun that fits a certain niche. If I didn't have one, I could see spending the money on a new H&R, Yldiz or Boito. Not sure I'd have much use for a pump .410 though. It definitely strikes me as one of those cartridges where shot placement is the name of the game.

I would like to very much set up for loading it though, because I'd like to shoot it a lot more than this $15-$23 per box situation allows.

I do have set 410 barrels for my Citori 625 Feather, and I do shoot the odd round of skeet with it, but I consider the 28 gauge far superior for wingshooting game birds. I don't shoot birds on the ground, so the 410 has no real appeal to me for hunting.

I used one a few years ago, borrowed from my brother in law, it was a double (side by side) - awesome fun and great for rabbits and such. Get one and have fun!
