To buy a .410 or not to buy a .410

I've had many, used to clear out the snakes in the spring and early summer out of the raspberry bushes before allowing the pickers in at 6am. Water snakes are nasty and the pickers are made happy.
 
Bought a single shot, hammerless Yildiz early last fall. It is already the most used shotgun in the collection. Buy one. Get something nice and light, I've seen a couple built on a 12 gauge sized action, and they're much too heavy for a pleasant woods stroll.
 
Was thinking like an H and R single shot, but then you can get a mossberg 500 for not much more! I have see the Yildiz online, they look pretty good too, lol too many choices!
 
Years ago I had a Mossberg 500 .410 , one of those guns that I regretted selling. Bought another one and the wife shot her first grouse with it last year. My son will get to shoot it in a couple of years. I'd carry it myself for birds, even have threatened to take it pheasant hunting.
It really is worth loading .410 shells, they are very expensive considering they average 1/2 oz loads. I picked up a used MEC junior too, makes it more affordable.
Another option is to buy a chamber adapter from Tradex(site sponsor) and use it in a break action 12 gauge. I want to shoot some gophers with my coachgun!

oh cool, do the chamber adapters stand up well, I have an old cooey 12ga that would work
 
I have a couple of chamber adapters from Tradex, they work well but I have'nt fired more than a dozen shells. Don't see why they would'nt last. They are under the "militaria" section on Tradex for some reason. For twenty some odd bucks you could'nt go far wrong.
 
I have a really old H and R take down that my grandma gave me. Would never buy another one for myself, maybe for the kids to learn on, as it is light to carry.

I went in looking for an NEF. The Yildiz caught my eye and was far lighter. When I saw that it folds in half, I was sold. Really a nice little gun for just over $200. Mine came with a nicely figured piece of wood on it as a bonus. :)
 
I have one but it only gets used by the women and children in my family. There aren't a whole lot of situations when a 12 gauge won't do the job as good or better.

The main issue I have with it is that the ammo cost is ridiculous compared to the 12 gauge. I could reload but then I'm still stuck with the issue that a 12 gauge can be used in more situations....
 
I use a double barrel El Fazan Folds down to half size and can be put in a packsack or in your aircraft. Use her for grouse and rabbits. Also have a pump and a single but the double is my favorite

I've always had a .410 of some sort, singles usually, then had a couple nice old doubles, but people kept talking me out of them. I bit the big one, got a pre-1940 Winchester mod. 42. I will still have it when I croak. What a nice upgrade. I don't use a .410 much either, just can't be without one.
 
Nothing wrong with having a .410 on hand. I ignored them for years (I use a 28 gauge for 'real' hunting) but used a friend's on some 'road grouse' last year and it worked fine. So I replaced my old single shot 12 gauge truck gun with a SxS .410 under the back seat.
