So I have been thinking of getting a couple air pistols for myself, can’t buy the actual real 22lr pistols I wanted cuz of our tard PM. Anyway that’s conversation for another day lol, but I’ve had my eyes on a crossman snub nose revolver that shoots pellets and bbs, as well as a semi auto like a glock, Winchester model 11, Umarex M9A3, and even a Krown Land babayaga hi-capa.

Would prefer with blowback, and semi/full auto features. Are they really worth to buy and shoot in the yard ?? Or do you guys think they’re a waste and more for kids like kinda thing

Well that would be a personal opinion that will go either way but as far as I'm concerned they are worth it. You can get some really realistic well built air pistols and they are not toys. Also, when you say shoot in the yard I assume you don't live in the city!

Air pistols are great and you will probably enjoy many, as long as they are decent quality. I like a variety, ranging from very accurate single shots with light triggers, to semi auto replicas that you can barely tell from the real thing. I shoot at paper bulleyes with the accurate models, and reactive targets with the more combat style pistols.

Imo it all comes down to personal preference. I have real handguns, and I can't shoot a pellet gun in the back yard where I live, so I don't have much interest. But when I was 19, didn't own real guns, and lived on a farm I loved my pellet guns.

If I lived in a house with a large basement I'd be very tempted to put a shooting range down there...

Nope I’m not in the city, tiny little town middle of nowhere lol. I’ve got about a good 1/4 acre here for my land. I use to shoot pellet rifles here as a kid always when growing up.

Yea my basement would be large enough to shoot in with pellet and bbs no problem lol, bungalow house with what was a fully open basement. Have a few walls up down there now. Still a good 30’ worth in one section tho…..

Ya I was thinking of some that are real weight and can’t tell the difference between a real one or pellet/bb style. All the ones I listed in my first post are all metal like and weighted like the real deal

I bought a few air pistols while I waited for transfers last year. Seemed every time I ordered a hand gun i bought its replica in BB/Pellet. I set up a small range in my basement and another in the garage. Blowback may be more realistic but you do use more gas. I have 2 with blow back and dont really see the thrill for the extra gas used but since you were not able to buy a handgun, the extra gas used may not be an issue for the realistic feel. I think all mine are Umarex metal but also have a couple cheap all plastic daisies. The Umarex Glock replicas are incredibly realistic in look weight and feel. It i set my Glock 17 and its Umarex BB partner side by side I would have to look close to tell them apart.

They are actually surprisingly accurate up to 25-30 feet and will punch a hole through a aluminum beer can at that range so back yard plinking may be fun if you do not have a neighbour who is going to call the law every time you use it. I think it is a great way to get young people comfortable with handguns and taught all the safety rules that go with it.

I just hate the idea of paying $1 per C02 canister.

That is a good point. I'd probably focus on things that are single shot for that reason. My dad recently gave me a Webley & Scott Premier Mk II he had kicking around, its certainly got some heft to it even though its a single shot.

How many shots does one get from a canister?
Very dependant on gun, seal at the end of the CO2 cartridge and weather. For non blowback on a normal summer day with non leaky seal and pellet oil, probably 50-75 at full power and then diminish the power after that until depleted at around 100. With blow back cut that by 25%

I like them, air pistols are fun, they have training use and I think they're worth buying and trying.

At 15 yards my replica ~400fps BB blowback air pistol's accuracy drops after ~35 shots. Windage is good, just elevation droops, so it is possible to gradually compensate with hold over until ~60 shots. Worth $1 for sure.

My advice is find somewhere concealed outside to safely and legally shoot (where no neighbour is going to freak out and jeopardise other collections). Basement or garage also works (eye pro on for ricochet). These things are also louder than you might guess, especially when shooting rapid or in pairs - so think of those neighbours if outdoors and your ears if indoors.

Transferable skills? Imo trigger training is possible to a basic level, aim training is comparable to handguns, grip training although basic is better than no training. Lastly ACT and PROVE training is transferable, so an air pistol is a valuable tool for training others, especially before they encounter handguns (or ahead of doing their CFSC).

I have a Beretta 92fs which I get out in the summer evenings and sit at the table outside and shoot my gongs. It got to the point I wouldn’t use the sites. Definitely helped with developing pistol skills. It can be heard from 75 m away if no other background noise. Go buy a couple and enjoy.

How much money is spent every day for coffee, doughnuts, booze, smokes, lunch, and all the other stuff we don't need but spend money on every day yet one worries about the cost of a CO2 cylinder for shooting an air pistol once in awhile!!

Speak for yourself. doughnuts booze and lunch are a need. Preferably in that order. lol

I have one of those really old Crossman 22 semi auto's. With flat nose pellets it works like a charm. Nice for hitting reactive targets. I have one of those magnetic duck targets you buy at cheapo places. Works well. Fun for a pistol at say 25 feet.
