Todays mistake...I'm damn lucky

Not much would happen there would not be much pressure built up. I've seen this a few times at our range, pick up brass like that a few times

A 9mm I managed to ignite in my 45.

Sweet Jeebus! Are you guys drunk when you're loading mags!?

Cold winter morning, poor light, 45ACP 1911 and a 9mm 1911 with identical grips both on the line. Loaded a 9mm mag in the 45.

Have since separated the guns so that they are not on the line at the same time.

Glad you were not hurt.. be careful and try to separate the guns like someone posted.. in the excitement of the day it could be a painful / dangerous lesson

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend trying this but generally there is no harm done to the pistol. The brass still tries to expand to seal the chamber ad surprisingly it still does a pretty good job of it, I've never seen too much blow back from someone who has had this happen. The bullet won't seal (or even really touch the rifling) so there is usually very little pressure in the chamber ad barrel once the brass expands and releases the bullet. I'm really surprised it even functioned, usually you get a weird sounding shot and very mild recoil.
I doubt there's any damage done to the barrel. I say give it to one of your friends to try and let him put a few rounds out of it and see if everything is ok ;)

might want to colour code the mags, throw a perm marker stripe down the 9mm mags or a light coat of spray paint (not too thick to impede function)

Glad you came out uninjured.

Best part of this is likely it will never happen again to you.

And it's a good reminder to the rest of us - check your gear, double check it & check it again.

Stay safe everybody.

I saw a fellow do it one day at the range with a Revolver. He by mistake loaded a cylinder with 41 mag. in a 44 mag gun. He only noticed it when they were hard to eject as the brass had over expanded. As another poster stated there was no harm to the gun as the presure is way down. Now on the other hand the brass sure takes a beating.

1911 .45 mags work really well with .40 ammo in a .40 cal 1911...I only have one .40 mag for my .40 1911, rest are all .45.
.
Off topic, I have about 8 .40 S&W mags for my 1911 .40 and none of them work close to correct. Time to try the .45 magazine I guess.
