Tomahawk 1200 pics and first impressions(update, test fired)

+2 if you want to start a marstar service quality tread go ahead but what the hell doses it have to do with budget trurk shootguns ??

One person. There are dozens of other negative comments from people who never contacted them..

Check the other posts and threads. There is definitely more than one.

Talking to the right people is ESSENTIAL in correcting something on occaison. Companies intentionally limit the ability of customer service people to make decisions. Sometimes you have to find the person who can make it happen.

In this case, if the guy had said: 'let me speak to the boss', he would have eventually got John and it would have been made right.

This is not an excuse, but rather a suggestion to improve your future relationships with companies whom you have an issue with. It goes well beyond Marstar.
No it's an excuse for s**t customer service reps. Why have them in the first place if you need to call the boss every time? I guess your solution is to phone Bill Gates at home if there's a problem with Microsoft.

Also, why do we have to improve relationships with companies? The companies should improve their relationships with customers or go out of business.

FWIW, I ran into some rough spots in a transaction with SIR/Cabelas recently. I didn't have to phone Mr. Cabela to make it right. One call to their customer service rep and it was sorted out promptly.

Seems like everyone here is an expert at running a business that sells multiple parts through multiple distributors as well as end users? I doubt it? Well let me tell you it is not easy! You guys can bash John all you want but IMHO you should all Faqh off until you have walked a mile in his shoes. I can tell you as the design manager for a company that produces 50 million parts a month and it is impossible to keep everyone happy! I can also tell you that the first thing we want to know about is customer related problems! That being said you cant watch over every part produced or every deal made. I am sure that Marstar will deal with this issue as best they can in due time. Am I saying that the Turk's semis are problem free? NO. BUT I AM CONFIDENT THEY WILL BE WHEN JOHN IS DONE! And really guys, pick up the phone and call! how Fahqing hard is that! Some people don't sit in front of there computers all day!! The start of this thread was useful and informative and helpful to all including Marstar to understand the problems with the mass produced product. The Marstar bashing is bull$hit. Please guys, I can honestly say I haven't seen anything or anyone bring more smiling faces to shooters, gun owner or not, than Marstar and their products.

I know I should take my money back, forget about this gun amd Marstar (I have lost enough time with this already) but I can't...

the guns in question are NOT similar, they come off the same line, at the same factory....
I find it strange that you find that review satisfactory (Tristar brand) but Marstar is not.

Possible, I looked for a few review before ordering and this one (Tristar) was looking similar...
their user manual is exactly the same...are you using Tristar rejects?

Reviewing your comments;
"BTW I am not a shotgun expert, my only other one is a cheap Maverick 88"
You feel qualified to review and place yourself in the same category as the gentleman in the USA ?

In the same category, no... Qualified to do a review on a machanical device, yes
What is your point...only experts should do review...? I am not a firearm expert so I can'tcomment the quality of the gun I just purchased...?

Maybe you should send my ex-Tomahawk to the gentlemen in the USA, I wonder what he would say about it...?

"The flat black finish on the barrel and the receiver is thin and scratches easily"
Come on now, your expertise should certainly make you aware that simply rubbing your fingernail across ANY such finish will show up as a "scratch", however wiping it clean with an oily rag makes it dissappear....

I tried, it didnt.... dissappear... masking a mark will not make it dissapear anyway...
as for the "ANY such finish", unless your are talking about really cheap BBQ paint...this is not true...

The selection of lighting for the photography will give whatever results the user seeks.

??? user seeks... does I understand you correctly Mr John? you are saying that I was intentionally trying to make you gun look bad ? Is it what you are saying?
BTW, are you an expert in photography... I cant comment the gun, I am no expert but you feel free to comment my pictures.... fine.

"The gun is internally rough... lots of machining marks and burrs"
I would appreciate your input here.
Please let me know how we can produce such a gun and offer it at a reasonable price and still remove all of these internal machining marks ? How do the have any negative effects on the functioning ?

Maybe mighty John you should ask Mossberg how they did it with the $195 Mexican Maverick...
Machining marks are a thing, burrs are an other... like the 2 cm long piece of aluminum that I removed from the receiver... And no I dont think that the machining marks have a negative effects, and I was expecting somes "to a certain point"...I should have said "There are no machining marks marks on that gun...everything was clean and shinny"?

"the gun came "factory equiped" with a few scratches on both side of the receiver...
this "z" shaped one being the most obvious"
You know as well as I do that these are friction marks from the cardboard packaging and are quickly wiped off with an oily cloth (as discussed above).

(As discussed above) Yes,the "Z" mark was a friction mark and a no, wiping it of with a oily cloth would not make it "dissapear".... and a new gun cheap or not should not come with friction marks from the cardboard
BTW If you take the time to rear the warranty page in the user manual (you can look at it online, it is the same manual), you will read this:
THIS BOX WILL PROTECT THE GUN BUT IS NOT DESIGNED FOR SHIPPING
http://www.tristarsportingarms.com/pdf/Manual_Semi-Automatic.pdf
So, dont try to make me look like a dumbass and package them correctly, we will all sleep better

"The choke tubes treads are rough and the notches even more... "
How does this effect the functioning ?

John, John, John...You are an expert, No?
Sit back and ask yourself... Does a choke tube that doesen't screw down completely in a shotgun barrel affect the functionning of that choke tube and/or the shotgun in question ?

"The first rail (The european one?) is actualy a banana shaped piece of very soft plastic...it is honestly the first time I see "something" like that on a firearm"
I am surprised at your comments, surely someone with your extensive knowledge knows better ?

Ok...
Does anyone here have a gun with a waver or picatinny rail made of soft plastic(soft like the plastic they use to make $25 guncase)?

"The other supplied rail is is molded (not milled) out of aluminum... "
Once again your expert knowledge shine through, but I have to argue with you, they machine made, not molded, as you state....

And I have to agrue with you, they are not machined... the slots maybe, but the rail itself is modlded from aluminum (where are the machining marks on that rail John?)

"detail both sides (metal parts are stamped)"
May I respectfully suggest you have a look at your own pictures, the major functioning parts are investment cast and machined.

Not stamped...ok machined...??? where. Put to shape with some kind of tool maybe...
Anyway, the Tomahawk trigger is not that bad, I mentionned it...

IN CONCLUSION, I mst say I amenvious of your great knowledge and please consider this as a job offer, we certainly can use someone like yourself who can come up with designs, plan production with the engineers at the factory, and most important of all, eliminate all of the issues mentioned and keep the price down.

Sorry John... I'm already doing that for a living here... and I have no wishes to work for an arrogant...

Damn, interesting and informative. Mangil, you took great pics and gave an excellent review. It's too bad that John took your comments personally. I've often felt that Marstar tends to elicit very STRONG feelings, negative and positive.

"These are grooves... not only marks or scratches..."
These were not some of your rough machining marks previously noted in your detailed evaluation ?

No, I've said it, the marks were not there before... I an not an expert as you noted gracefully...but I am 90% certain that they where done by the shells rim...why? because all the empty shells that I examined had shiny marks on their rim . those marks were closely matching the grooves.

Thinking about it...why dont you send me that barrel back, so I could do a Rockwell test on it...should be fun to compare it to a chunk of aluminum

"Much more gun for the money... they are not pretty... solid feel... they are what I expected from the Tomahawk... rough but tough"
I find this comment interesting, it's ok for others to be rough and tough but not Marstar ??

Rough and tough, no problem... your Tomahawk is not. Rough and Soft better describe it...

I've said this also... read my comments, I was looking for a tool, this was a toy

NOW the most important question of all, you claim to have fired this shotgun, why is the bolt face completely clean ?
Did you polish the bolt face after shooting the gun ?
John

I claim...??

No I didn't polish the bolt face, I cleaned the gun before I shipped it back to you nothing more,
The bolt was cleaned (like the rest of thr gun) with home made "ed's red"... then wiped clean

I was also a little bit suprised that the face looked that good because after seeing the barrel, I was expecting a "Remington 12GA" engraved forever in the face but it was not the case... why, I don't know...you are the expert... why dont you take that gun and fire a few shots with it...

Now, "you claim"...tell me clearly what you think Mr Mighty John The One... I did not fired this gun...? I bought it only to make a bad review... I came here from nowhere just to piss you off and
discredit your product? are you under strong medication...?

PLEASE EXPLAIN

BTW The gun was fired after job Thursday August 14 2008 at the Beausejour club here in Quebec... 2 others members (don't know them) where present, If you really need it, I can try to find their name and have them contact you Mr John... need their phone number too?

OK, this thread officially makes my head hurt. I sometimes find customer/business spats entertaining, but maybe both sides should "get a room" or "step outside" (whichever seems most appropriate). I will thank the thread originator for the photos - about the best I've ever seen on here and certainly worth discussion on their own merits.

but maybe both sides should "get a room" or "step outside" (whichever seems most appropriate).

I think you are right, this is going nowhere...

I'm a littel bit sorry, this review ended in a mess...

Like I said earlier, I didn't make this review because the gun was bad...this was not intended to be my personnal revenge against Marstar...

In MY opinion, this gun is bad, the review reflect it and yes I tried it

am I an expert...? no
am I qualified to do a review...you'll be the juges

If someone here believes that this review is irrevelant and that the gun is worth a try... feel free to do so...

let me give you a nice big tip should you ever get into a spot like this again. I manage customer service, and I deal with other customer service reps all the time in my industry. When you have a reasonable need, and the person you are talking to cannot help you make it so, ask to speak to their supervisor.

In this case, if the guy had said: 'let me speak to the boss', he would have eventually got John and it would have been made right.

This is not an excuse, but rather a suggestion to improve your future relationships with companies whom you have an issue with. It goes well beyond Marstar.

And do you have any great suggestions as a customer service guru when you GET the boss or Attempt to and that even fails? Hmmm?

Wow... the love-in for Marstar is awesome... again I have to ask why this one particular company is allowed to get away with 'whatever' but every one of us would blow up at a Sears, or Canadian Tire, or Wal-Mart, or Bell or any other company that does as much business as Marstar but when it comes to John and his crew...

Anyways, thanks again Mangil for the review, it was most excellent despite what we have been told is a lack of qualifications for doing a review of something you bought.

Perhaps because the majority don't agree with your opinion. Just a guess;)

+2 if you want to start a marstar service quality tread go ahead but what the hell doses it have to do with budget trurk shootguns ??

To my knowledge, these budget turk shotguns are only available from Marstar. The shotgun and the retailer is like a package deal.

They should lock this thread.
I found the review and pictures good. I was thinking of buying one of the semi's but will wait for more reviews.
My guess is John gets jumped on every time he goes into a thread so he ends up lashing back. No not perfect but a little understandable.Marstar does serve a big nitch in the Canadian gun market,it would be a big loss if his business went away.
Maybe they should do there own reviews as well with pics of all there guns etc and what can be expected from them.Even grab some customer reviews and put them up as well. But of course that would add costs.
This thread is not pretty anyway.

I find it funny that this shotgun is actually but a wee bit nicer then my Rem 1100 and am I #####ing about it nope. I like the fact of chromed lined parts and a few options that my Rem 1100 never had.

Guys, guys, guys,..
This thread started as a REVIEW, nothing more, a REVIEW. The gun has some issues, we can agree with that. John did not manufacture this item, he sells and imports this stuff for your enjoyment.

Is this a one of, or is this the manufacturing of the fire arm line?

John...
Have you had a chance to examine any of the ones you have in stock? Are there any issues with them? What did the manufacturer have to say? Are you going to continue importing this line?
From what I have read here so far, it is clear that you are going to make good on your guarantee. Good on ya.

These are the important questions.

We have no need to publicly slam each other. I have read good things and bad on here. I will have to form my own opinion.

Nothing is perfect. No-one is perfect.

Every one involved should step back and take the rest off line.
I am for voicing ones opinion, but slinging crap is better off done else where.

Opinions are opinions, some have well informed opinions and others, well enough said. Keep your composure.

I guess, really, we need John to give us an idea of how many of these guns he's sold. This is one complaint, out of how many?

Like the M305, literally thousands sold, half a dozen complaints. Taken care of as soon as they are identified. Pretty good service, if you ask me.

There is always someone with an axe to grind. Sometimes the same type that complains the goldfish they bought, four hours ago and left in the car, is dead when they got it home.

Given the amount of stuff John has sold, and the odd complaint 'here', I 'd say the odds are in Marstars favour. I don't see these complaints on other boards. Perhaps some feel elite for belonging here, posting anonomously and with impunity. Perhaps even trying to curry favour with the competition? Just a thought.;)

Managil,

I'll buy your shotgun, for a fair price, if you're not happy, send me a PM. An afternoon, cleaning and tuning, I'm sure I can persuade another person to take it off me, in perfect working order, and start another new gunnut into our fraternity with something cheap, fun and simple to use. Just what that gun is supposed to be. You want a defence, meat, competition gun? You get what you pay for. Thanks for the review though. The pictures were top notch and you spoke you're mind. Just what we expect.
