Don't get me wrong - I still love my 99. But with the way the deer fly with hounds at their heels, I'm thinking the semi will let me squeeze off a few more rounds before the deer gets back into thick brush.
I live bout a hour south of you and I hear what you're sayin! It's scrubby-swampy fast dog drivin! If you got your heart set on a semi, try to find a Remington 7400 THEY WORKED AWESOME! But a Remington 7600 wins the reliability game, I use one you'd be surprised how fast you can ring em out and hit what your shootin at!
Speed wise there is no disadvantage to using a pump action because you cycle the action as it recoils. Get a Remington 7600 in 30 06 instead. Lots of good ones are available used.
I must agree, it's what I use for everything I hunt as far as big game goes!
You wont regret a BAR. Same cant be said for every Remington semi owner.
The ones who still own em do so for a reason.
A member of my gang missed a chance at a nice buck last year with his remington semi because he didn't let the bolt slam closed hard and it failed to fire allowing the buck to walk off. Then he said it wasn't the first time that had happened. Hoping he shows up this year with something else, if that happened to me once I know I'd be gun shopping. I've heard several BAR owners who prefer the safari to the longtrac but dont know the reasoning behind their preference.
He should probably learn to work his gun before taking it out.
You want to make up for inaccuracy with volume?
No sir, same accuracy with more volume it's a win win, let him be.
My thoughts when I read that post as well. I guess we western hunters can't quite understand.
You guys really can't, we can't watch them walk in from a day away out here. BAM it's there. BAM it's gone, huh that all happened in 2 seconds. My Grandfather lives in Alberta he can't fathom it either, Gonna bring him huntin this year with his super whizzbang bolt and scope. Love the guy but he'll learn opening day that it's nodda gonna work.

]Not all shots on game are taken from a blind or tree stand. There is also a style of hunting called pushing bush, a semi make very good sense for this type of hunting.[/B] Also any rifle, semi, bolt, pump, single shot, or lever that will group 2 to even 3 inches at 100 yards is quite capable of taking game out to 200 yards. Long range is fun but most game animals are shot at close range.
At least somebody gets it!
About half of the game I take is done pushing bush. I don't own an automatic and don't know anyone who does, I have practiced enough to be able to hit these running shots. What I am saying is, if you are not able to hit a running deer on the first shot how does being able to fire 3 more quickly make you any more accurate. Granted you maybe able to fire 4 shots instead of 2, but I think all that does is allow you to miss more.
I have nothing against automatics in general, but if you are going to use one I would think that you should still practice enough until you can hit running deer on the first shot just as you would a standing deer.
I am not claiming I never miss, but when I do I don't think being able to shoot faster is the solution.
I shot a spike buck last fall when I was running out. Hit him once, that was the 3rd and last shot I fired before he got into the REAL thick stuff where I couldn't see him. First 2 shots, 2 big hemlocks took the full brunt of both balls, this was about a 5 second window to get on him and get a ball in him. Bangbang..bang. 3 shot, 5 seconds, dead deer cause I know how to work my pump 30-06 and practice non stop all year. I know how and where the OP hunts, it's THICK and a semi will help get the deer down.
It didn't take long for the old "why do you need a semi" taint to creep in.
Right?
Read above, I'm sure the OP has some awesome stories too!
Actually I'll ask RedneckRem we need some stories of fast shootin and deer killin!
