God no, I just always notice a different mindset between guys who hunt the thick bush 100% of the time and guys who hunt the open spaces. Horses for courses.

thick brush you say, maybe look in to the Kel Tec RFB (308), I know you said 30-06 but it sounds like you could benefit from a shorter rifle

I'm getting a Browning Shortrax only cause I want one real bad and I wouldn't mind a little reduced recoil with factory loads, not that I hafta have it, but it just comes with the s/a, and I'll welcome it. I started life with a Rem s/a 30-06 many moons ago and have had everything else since. I'm a big lever fan and have a lot of bolt actions, as well. It's time for another semi, just cause.

Gidday folks!

After 22 years of hunting with a Savage 99e that is older than me, I'm finally ready to move on to a semi. About half the lads I hunt with use .308 and the other half use .30-06. After trying some of their rifles, I'm leaning more towards to the '06. Where my trouble starts is which one to buy. I originally looked at the Browning BAR Longtrac and loved it. But a lad in Richmond said I would be overpaying (which I don't completely believe) and that I should get the Remington 750. The lads in Nepean almost threw me out of the store when I asked if they had any 750s and recommended the Browning ("Oh, but we don't have any in stock and don't know when we're getting more") or the Benelli R1. I'm certain that if I go to yet another store, they'll tell me to forget all three of those and recommend yet another bush cannon. I'm hoping to learn what makes one manufacturer better than an other, and I believe personal experience counts. Thanks for any and all help!

Ok so I didn't read all the pages and someone may have given you this advice. I did read enough to see some giving advice you didn't ask for.
So you want a fast handling rifle to get you a second, third, forth shot at running deer ahead of dogs. To me you are interested in a new rifle and the cartridge you would like is 30/06. But the rifle you may like the best is a winchester model 100 in .308 or possibly .284 win.

A fast pointing, fast handling and cycling gun.

A Ruger carbine in .44 magnum would also work but the M100 in .308 would give you the option of taking a single well aimed shot at 200 yards or better as well.

I would have to agree gtrussell. I have a friend with a 40 year old BAR in 30-06 and a buddy with one of the new models. It's pretty self evident that the new ones are better built and shoot more consistently.
Say what you will, but FN built rifles in this age are quality pieces. I myself have an FN M70, It's built so well that I expect it to be a family heirloom.

When talking about sheep rifles in one of his books, Jack O'Connor said 'you could also use a pump, semi, or lever action, if you were allergic to a bolt action rifle'. What he meant was that would be the only reason for someone to want something other than a bolt action rifle, but then again he was talking about sheep rifles. Jack had a unique way of saying something.
